Ok I have a SW 19-3 and a SW 28-3. I love both, but the 19 is a safe queen. I am actually thinking about selling her, since I cant bring myself to shoot it. So I am at the drool shop today and I spot a 586 PC.

SW has reissued the 586 with a wonderful blue steel finish. The PC version is a 3" full lug barrel with 7 shots. Guy was asking under a 1K for it. It felt so nice in my hand and the trigger was glass, pure glass.

Anyway, I went home to think it over, pulled out my 19. It is just as nice if ot nicer. The finish is nicer I believe. So the differences between the 19 and the 586 are 4" versus 3" barrel and 6 shot versus 7. I think the 19 weighs less and has a little more panache, it being more the classic. I am going to save myself some money and start shooting the 19.

I'd have made the same decision. Hold onto that M19. If you really want a 586, there are plenty of used examples out there for much, much less than a grand.

I am a big fan of the 586. Is that 3-inch PC the one with a ported barrel? Seems like a weird choice to me. And I think that gun has a matte blue finish?

I have a good ol' non-PC 586 (4-inch)... and a recent limited run 7-shot, at that. I love it. I love all my Smiths, but this is the ONE I would NEVER EVER part with. Just such a fun, accurate, well built, gorgeous shooter.

Good decision. I was reading the first part of your post and got to the part where you said: the 19 is a safe queen. I am actually thinking about selling her, since I cant bring myself to shoot it. and I wanted to yell out NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 19 and 586/686 are both fantastic guns. You can always pick up a 586 later. I own a 686, but I may get myself a 19 or 66 one day.

Your 19 was built to shoot. But if you shoot mags through it, do limit them and stick to the 158 grain stuff that is not as hard on the forcing cone as the light rounds (especially 125 grains and less). I think you can still find used barrels for the 19/66, but they are probably becoming harder to find.

Enjoy your 19!
