Lately I haven't been shooting much as I'm still stationed in Germany so when I'm home I've just tagged along w/ my friend to Scottsdale Gun Club. The thing is, they're anal on the ammo you use there (has to be Magtech or Magsafe, can't remember which). I need to find a place here that will let me use what I want that way I can use cheaper stuff for plinking and the occasional practice w/ normal carry ammo. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I shoot at Scottsdale Gun Club every week, a lot of surplus. They do not restrict ammo to Magtech only, unless you are shooting one of their rental guns. You can use any ammo as long as the bullet does not attract a magnet. They just don't want you to use any steel core bullets.

Thanks for the info. I went in there once w/ my G22 and they asked my what ammo I ad in it and then told me that I had to use the Magtech stuff.

I'm a member at SGC. Untrue on the ammo restrictions.

You rent one of their guns = you shoot their ammo. Fair rules, IMO. Don't want anyone shooting that backstop (which can handle 600 Nitro Express and 50 BMG, BTW) with AP or steel core ammo and wearing it out prematurely, making my dues go up!

I go in there with my handloads or any retail ammo I want (WWB, Federal, Remington UMC, whatever) and shoot any caliber I want (30-30, .308, .45acp, 44mag, .22LR, .400corbon). I've only once had my ammo checked for steel core content, and it was with a mixed batch of .30-30 handloads I was experimenting with (100gr up to 170gr bullets in different powders).

They are very proactive on checking any gun that may use milsurp ammo, as a lot of that stuff is made with mild steel cores that prematurely wears the backstop out faster than lead.

It's a great range... the only thing it lacks is a couple of 100 yard lanes to truly shoot a rifle. 25 yards may cut it for poodleshooter commandos, I guess.

You wanna shoot any ol' junk ammo out of your own guns, go out in the desert or to Usery Pass shooting range just north of Ellsworth Road and US-60. They could care less what you shoot out there, as long as when/ifyour gun blows up it doesn't hurt anyone.

Ditto on Ben Avery.
If you find yourself in the far east valley, you can go HERE (http://www.riosaladosportsmans.com/).

Scottsdale Gun Club is the wrost place in the world. I had a jam and one of the jerks who works there comes up behind me and grabs my pistol and me while I am clearing it, and proceeds to say, "excuse me Sir, please don't point at the ceiling. There are water pipes up there." :what: Keep in mind that the pistol was pointing down range and toward the ceiling, not even straight up. What kind of place does that stupidity. That could have caused an accident IMO. And what kind of place puts water pipes above a shooting range? If I was pointing it at someone, I could understand phsycial force, but any other time its just asking for trouble.

Go to Ben Avery. They are a seperate world better. SGC is just another BBC imo.

I don't know if I'd go that far, but it's way, way way down the list on ranges that I prefer going to for more reasons than I'm willing to go into now.

Drive to Ben Avery or Rio Salado, whichever is closer, enjoy the outdoors and take your time without being annoyed and harassed at every turn.

And whatever you do, never, never take your gun to be worked on by SCG.

 The only thing they are "anal" about is potentially junk surplus, steel-cored/jacketed or incendiary rifle ammo. They do insist on using their range ammo (MagTech) in their own rental guns. I see nothing wrong with any of this. I usually bring in my own handgun ammo for my own guns. And you can shoot rifle cartridges up to 8,000 ft. lb. of muzzle smash. ;)

One day I brought in a rifle to shoot, said I had my own ammo, and the girl wanted to check it out with a magnet. Bewildered, I brought out my box of .22 Long Rifle. She said, "Oh, sorry, I didn't know it was a .22." :D

Thank you all for your input. Looks like I have a few new places to try out now. On a separate but related note, yesterday I found a new store which will be getting most of my business from here on out. It's S&S firearms down on Priest. It's just a little place run by a guy and his wife, but he was very knowledgable and went out of his way to help me. I had been calling around to find a Dan Wesson PM-7 in 10mm. He was the only one who not only offered to find one for me, but got back to me w/in an hr w/ a new pistol, good (IMO) price, had it overnighted, paid half the shipping cost, and stayed open late so I could come in and pick it up. If any of you are currently in the market for something, check this guy out.
