That's brilliant!
It looks like it should be a sidearm for Captain Nemo, or maybe Doc Savage. I'm very curious about it as well.

It's a Bergmann 1896 No. 2, in 5mm Bergmann (they also made a No. 3 in 6.5mm Bergmann, and a No. 4 in 8mm Bergmann). Depending on when that pistol was made, it may be chambered for either the rimless and grooveless version of 5mm Bergmann, or the later ("neuer Art" - "new design") version of 5mm Bergmann with an extractor groove; the first versions didn't have extractors, and just used retained gas to extract the cases. The ammo came in little clips of 5 rounds, and you loaded it by swinging down the cover on the right hand side of the pistol (the knurled button at the bottom of the pistol is part of the cover latch/handle), then dropping in a clip and closing the door back up; this freed a spring-loaded arm that pushed the rounds up into feeding position (the strawed screwhead on the angled tube up near the muzzle is what holds the spring in that makes the arm lift). Apparently, around 500 of the "old style" (rimless/grooveless) versions were made, but , since everyone was going to the C96 Mauser, the design didn't last very long in the marketplace.:(
Here's a shot showing how the pistol was loaded:

Like the old joke, if you have ask, then you can't afford it. One in the same condition as your photo, 4500 to 5500 dollars.

It's a real shame that gun had to be deactivated, even though I wouldn't fire it even if I had a case of ammo.
That is a really interesting looking gun!
