For a TEOTWAKI type situation, which action/gun would you prefer? Taking ammunition availability, parts availiablity, and fix it yourself if it does break as highest priorities. 1911 is .45, glock is 9mm or .45, Revolvers are .357 magnum. Just the general type. Leave any comments you think are necessary.

Thanks :)

Any of these. The hard part would be picking the make and the calibur.

Even though i have mostly Glock's and no 1911's at this point, if forced to pick one type of handgun for good i'd choose the 1911.

Luckily I don't and can have and carry whatever my heart desires.:neener:

DA revolver, just for reliability and simplicity in such a situation.

Of the choices you provide, I'd go w/ the 1911 for its versatility

Not a big surprise - this is why the space people carry .45s to the new space station (fiction by author), and I predict empty .45 ACP casings orbiting the moon soon. Next June.

Someone run this in the auto section and include SA, DA, DAO, and "safe" action (GLOCK). Someone not lazy.

I voted grock.

ETA: lol @ one person rolling w/ sa revolver as their ONLY choice if that's ALL they could have

GreenFurniture, that is the most beautiful picture I have ever seen.

BTW, I voted 1911.

simplest mechanically, most rugged hands down. Think of the kind of use a SA revolver got in the old west. No other actions is as rugged. I own double action revolvers, autos, and SA, if I had to choose. It would be my ruger Single action that would go....

I voted DA for the simplicity and reliability, but I would have voted 1911 if I had read that all extra and replacement parts are available

If I could only have one kind of handgun action, I'd kick the ass of the person who made up that stupid rule.... (quoted for truth)

I have a DA/SA pistol and I'm not voteing in your "Poll" :banghead:.

By the way welcome to the THR JonP pull up a chair :).

You list 1911 and Glock as different action types?
They're both the same short-recoil Browning actions.
The correct options would be:
Short Recoil
Blowback
Gas Operated
DA Revolver
SA Revolver

And pistols that aren't the 1911 or the glock do exist. Better ones in fact.:neener:

Huh?

Big diff between SA semi-auto and internal striker.

I do apologize if I have offended anyone by not including their favorite action. I've spent a long time debating and I had narrowed it down to these four and wanted opinions between them.

The ONLY reason I didn't pick single action is that there isn't a J frame sized single action (not including NAA minis) that's compact enough for back up. But, too, speedloaders are significantly faster than reloading a SA revolver. So, I suppose one of my DA 357s backed up by a .38 snub or two.:D

I'd definitely want a magnum revolver over any auto for the power and long range accuracy.

I voted for the 1911 even though my namesake would lead you to belive otherwise. I have yet to find a handgun that feels better to me than the 1911 platform. I have owned wheel guns in the past and just dont care for them <shrugs>. GreenFurniture that is a beautiful picture. I am rather fond of the two at the bottom right. I have always meant to own a pair of matching 1911's one day.

I don't understand by what you mean by saying which type of "action" you would prefer in a handgun, and then you list two makes/models of handguns, and then list two types of revolver actions. Do you want to know which type of handgun one would prefer from those choices, or are you really talking about preferable action type.

If you are asking about action type, I would choose a Single action or double action pistol with only metal parts, those for tactical situations. If you added another choice, less commonly heard among handguns, I would choose a bolt action pistol for long term survival of a certain sort - like out in the wilderness. I would never opt for a revolver, much to complicated to repair when required, and they require repair more often than many seem to think.

All the best,
Glenn B

For the longest time I considered the 4" barrel .357 Magnum revolver such as a S&W K or L frame or a Ruger Security Six or GP100 to be the ultimate choice for one gun only. Mouse loads to belch fire magnums with reasonable handiness and firepower not to mention superb accuracy and reliability.

I still like the concept but today I will keep my GLOCK 26 as my one gun over all others. Very small for pocket carry, works well on a belt, very accurate, very reliable, extremely easy to maintain, budget ammo with a very wide variety of available loads.

I am blessed to not have to make such a decision at this point. That way my S&W 4" Combat Magnum can stay home with the GLOCKS, Berettas, SIG's, Rugers and other miscelaneous boom sticks.

1911. I know the manual of arms, how to fix basic stuff if it poops the bed and have a bunch of spare parts I haven't needed so far but might one day.

SAO is my preferred action, in any platform that utilizes this action: 1911, HK USP, FN HP etc...

DA/SA would be a distant second..

Not a fan of SAO myself. I like DA/SA simply because no matter what, if there is a bullet in the chamber the gun will fire, and even more so with DA revolvers which is what I would choose. Gotta love a DA revolver, no safetys, no is there a round in the chamber; no BS.
