I just got invited to go on a deer hunt the first week in january.
Well I am going to go to the range early tom. morning to double check my sights on my sks. On my way to the range I am going to stop at walmart.
I need some good ammo to use to kill a deer about 50yards away I will have to buy it at walmart so I can shoot a couple at the range to check and make sure it will shoot as good as my what ever brand ammo It is that i bought from aim proably 3 years ago. I don't think it is wolf it does not have the green case mine is silver case.

Silver case? Silver Bear perhaps?

Could still be wolf. They changed their cases to silver about 3-4 years ago.

Silver bear is it I just went and looked I still had the tag. Has anybody bought any good ammo from walmart that will work for deer hunting.

Whatever you get make sure its hollow point or soft point!
Your choice will be limited to domestic also at Wally World.
You might try local gun shops for Wolf H-P or S-P more in tune with your SKS and good enough at 50 yds.
Good luck.

+1 and preferably the SP. It should also be a little easier to find since
Wolf and S&B made a lot of it.

Buy Soft Point ammo. Most likely Winchester or Remington. The hollow point ammo, like Wolf is very unlikely to expand properly or at all.

IIRC, Walmart had Remington 7.62x39 SP ammo in stock last year. I remember it being more in line pricewise with their other hunting ammo than with the surplus ammo that I shoot.

The HP ammo from Silver Bear won't be good for deer because like Jackal said, it doesn't expand enough. I have about 2500 rounds of it and shooting through wood, it behaves more like FMJ than SP hunting ammo.

I think soft points are your better bet over the hollow points too.
I don't know what Wally Mart carries but there are many manufactures of soft points to choose from when you have the time to shop. The Corbon, Remington, Winchester and Federal brands are a bit more expensive than the Silver Bears, Wolf and S&B though.

Along with S&B, don't forget the other Bears in the family too.:)

And Wolf has this to say about their Soft Point entry...

WOLF 7.62x39mm 154gr. Soft Point that offers improved accuracy over the standard 122gr. projectile.
Projectile:
Grains: 154
Jacket: Bimetal or Copper
Type: SP
Primer: Berdan
Muzzle Velocity:
(ft/sec) 2104
Energy (FPE): 1514.1

Trust me the wolf hollow points expand just fine.

As far as Wal-Mart goes your ammo selections are limited. The only 7.62x39 I have ever seen at my local WM has been Remington UMC FMJ.

ED HARRIS back in 95 wrote an excellent article (Rifleman)and describing the bullets he designed for NEI to make moulds for.

The 311-155-2R mould lee makes is his design

I agree a bullet of this weight is more suited for hunting and if it is cast with wheel-weight metal or softer and NOT lino, Ed says with will deform and not shatter and do some real damage on impact

It's more accurate here than the lighter bullet spec'ed for SKS

I was just at the local wal-mart and they had the winchester 123gr sp, but that is all the sp's i saw there. btw the best ammo as far as accuracy, and surefire reliability in my ak and sks, is the wolf 154grsp, it s more accurate then the winchester for me but this is an isue considering that wal-mart dosen't sell wolf! oh well at least you will be able to give them a try next time, check them out they are accurate, reliable, and 154gr sp.

Ammo from American manufacturers are designed for sporting rifles such as the Ruger Mini 30 and has .308in bullets, the bore of your SKS (as well as Aks) is .311in. not .308. You will find better accuracy and performance from the Wolf or S&B ammo.

The famous "Yabbut" comes into play.

US Made Ruger rifles were barrelled with barrels that remained within Ruger spec at the right end (i.e. runing a bit large, according to Ed harris one of their QC people who dealt with that issue on my cast bullets list recently.

Plus the leade in the Ruger 7.62 x 39 rifles was a bit long to enable european made cartridges to still work

FINALLY, check, with a micrometer, the W/W White box 7.62 x 39. I am told by some sources(one at E.Alton Ill-Olin Brass) that Sellier & Bellot makes these and they are .311 mas o menos. The one box I bought was.

But I cast my own bullets (Lee 311-155-2R) at .311 and they ar every happy

Check the wildlife regs for your state. All I'm familiar with prohibit FMJ rounds, and the hollow points could be a problem. Mo. regs are a bit vague. The actual code says explicitly no FMJ, but the on line and hand-out booklets say expanding type projectile only. I've heard second hand the Agents frown on cheapo hollow points.

Not worth the difference in price for a single hunt. Good luck.
