What would cause this? The gun is spotless and was working fine until some friends shot 4 rounds through it.

Most likely a broken cylinder locking bolt.it is the little thing that sticks up through the lower part of the receiver under the cylinder.
That is the part of the firearm that locks up the cylinder into battery when the hammer is in full cock.
A replacement part is available but needs to be fit.

Had that happen on a friends SAA clone. Turned out to be the spring under the bolt that is supposed to lift it into engagement with the cylinder. One of the fingers had broken off.

Quick visit to GunPartsCorp (Numrich Arms) and less than $10 (with shipping) had it back in play. Needed a tad of grinding on the spring to make it fit but no big deal.

Brownells carry Uberti replacement cylinder bolt springs along with several other manufacturers versions of this spring.
These are the most common breakage issues with Uberti revolvers and it is a good idea to keep one or three extras on hand.
