first i would like to know what model xd should i use the service or the tactical model? which would allow me to shoot in more various types of competitions? forgive me i know very little about the comp side of the house.

this is what i am thinking so far. i want an xd9 either service or tactical. and the following upgrades.
springer precision, ultra comp trigger job.
dawson precision adjustable rear sight and dawson front site.
polished feed ramp
extended mag release on the right side.
grip tape
don's guide rod #22
and big mouth mag well.
i would also like to get the frame and parts hard chromed finished as well.

so for you competition gurus how does that sound so far and what would ya'll do different or not do. thanks in advance!

I suggest you check out the various forms of competition and see what is going on before you start cutting up a gun.

If you just want to jump in the deep end, all that stuff would be more or less beneficial. Since I shoot mostly IDPA; I can tell you that there is a limit to how much you can extend a magazine catch (It can be a little taller but a big head is not allowed.) and that the gun must fit The Box so you have to be careful about how big a magazine well funnel you use. I don't know who Don is or what kind of guide rod he sells, but you cannot use tungsten to add weight.

thanks for the advise, i appreciate it as i know very little. don's guide rods are huge with the xd shooters and owners. i have a #22 in my service model .40, and it does aid in reducing recoil but also it is ss, and not captive so it is easier to clean and maintain.

btw what are the dimensions that the gun has to be able to fit in? the box i mean! thanks again!

Put sights and grip tape on it. Shoot the snot out of it and THEN decide what else it needs. I would go for the 5" myself in an XD.

The IDPA box dimensions are as follows:

Revolvers do not need to fit into the box.


I'm with Mr. Watson, shoot some differnt forms of competition before you started "pimping out" your gun. Some of the stuff that people do is just plain dumb. Remember, a fancy gun with lots of "competition" parts cannot help you if you suck.:D

If you plan on shooting much USPSA, Then I would suggest a 5" XD .40. Since you have plans on using a magwell, That puts you in limited 10 divison. You can be very competitive in L10 with this model.
A friend of mine has one with a Canyon Creek trigger, and it has a very light crisp pull. Very 1911-ish.

If you plan on shooting the XD9, I would leave the magwell off and run in production division. Production is scored minor no matter what caliber you use. (9mm+).

I shoot a 4" XD-40 in IDPA

Canyon creek trigger set a 4# but more important the reset is MUCH better

I have a Dons guide rod and a 22# spring

I have had some issues with the slide not locking open when empty I think I will go back to an 18# spring and keep using the dgr

thanks for all the great replies guys, great help. i have been checking out the different rule books, and i have read them front to back, and did some research, and i think that i would enjoy IDPA the best, just from reading, because of the concept, and it will be more fitting for what i want to do. i was thinking about the stock service pistol division. i think that would be a great place to start. thanks guys agan for all the input!

I think but I'm not sure it has to do with the way the firing pin is set and released???? but i have to tell you I DONT KNOW!!!

Without a doubt, the XD is a single action pistol and is classified as such by the BATFE and IDPA. That puts it in ESP.

call up rich dettlehouser at canyon creek custom. just google search it. Tell him what game you want to shoot he will tell you what you need and what is garbage. he setup my XD for production class, it's a great gun now.

It sounds like you are describing my Lim 10 gun. I had all the work done by Rich at Canyon Creek but I am sure Springer Precision does great work as well. If you are going to shoot it in the Limited Division you will want to be sure and get a good mag release the stock one leaves a lot to be desired of. I will post some pics when my mag well gets here.

Ammunition, Ammunition and MORE ammo.

No accessory you add to your firearm will make it shoot better than some quality time on the range.

I shoot an XD45 tactical in L10. I'm not great at it but shoot some where in the middle of the ranks. I've heard many people wanting different gadgets or doo-dads on their XD. That's great. My suggestion. Put ammo through it.

Then dry fire practice a LOT. Then practice more. Then shoot more, then dry practice more....

THEN and only then; Buy a race gun and one of them darth vader belt rigs.

Seriously, nothing beats quality practice. Look into different schools or a coach. Watch a few matches and talk with some of the masters. Ask about getting a day of practice/training under the watchful eye of a master.

If you absolutely HAVE to spend money on accessories; Consider a timer and Steve Andersons book on Refinement and Repetition. Then set up an "El Presidente" in minature in a spare room.

Look at the bright side. When your mother-in-law stays in the spare room, Think of the message that will be conveyed.

Uh, it's going to be a little tough getting the plastic frame hard chromed. First of all a heavier spring makes the gun harder to shoot not easier. I use a 12 lb spring in my Glocks for Minor PF and a 13 for Major.
Before you start pimping out your gun learn to shoot it first. Spend your pimp money on practice ammo.
I would go for the 5" in .40. It can be used for Limited, Limited 10, Production and ESP. A good trigger job is the best money you will spend.
Learn to reload. It will save you much dollars. A down loaded .40 shoots softer than a 9mm.
