Just wanted to get an idea of those shooters out there, are shooting the 500MAG handgun SW, TAURUS etc.

.454 is as big as I go. I do this in a SRH, which is not too big to pack around. My problem with the 500's and the 460 is that the guns are just too big physically to pack around. I haven't tried the 4 inch versions, but I use mine for hunting, so 4 inch wouldn't help. I also think the 454 will take care of anything I'm gonna run into. I've taken most common game, excluding elk, with mine. It's great for boar.

Got my pick of three and love each one. Basically shoot the 8". as my main gun. No worse than a semi hot loaded .44.

While I worked at the gun shop, one of my favorites to shoot was the 500. Unfortunately, can't afford one, ammo is expensive but I would like to have one--why?--I don't know other than they are fun and they really do get someone's attention.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh others who love big wheelguns!
I got the S&W 500 8" & the S&W 460 8" love em both!

When I brought the 500 home my son (16 at the time)
asked what I wanted the 500 for. Went out to the range, my son
wanted to shoot it. He sat down and loader her up. Took aim and
dropped the hammer.
Boom, guys at the other benches got up and came over to see
what just made the noise.
My son turned really slow, looked at me with a HUGE grin and said
" this is soooooooo cool". :D

The problem......... he keeps shootin up all the ammo........:banghead:
hi-ho hi-ho to the loading bench I go. I do love that boy!

Best for the holidays! Mike

I have a 500 S&W that I load down with some 350 grainers. It is really not bad to shoot and IMO the recoil is strong but not as sharp as my .44mag. The gun does weigh 6 pounds which I'm sure helps slow the recoil. Anyway I do have one & shoot it frequently. :) -Don

The .50 handguns are a decidedly uncomfortable and unpleasant creature to be around. It's noise and concussion can ruin the range experience for anyone near it. The shooter is having fun but everyone else is wishing he/she/it would just go away.

500? I have shot one. Don't own one.

As far as what I have and shoot big-bore wise, it's 44 mag, 454, and heavy 45 colt.

Now if I can include my contender? The 375 JDJ barrel WILL get your attention, real quick!:D

When you have a revo that large, a rifle starts to look much more attractive. Now here's a question. Why not a S&W .500 revolving carbine? With a 16"-22" barrel, the only word that comes to mind is "drool".

I have heald both the S&W .500 and .460 in the 2.75" model from the Emergency Survival Kit. Well, they are heavier than they look. If I were to buy one it would be the .460 for 2 reasons. The .460 S&W Mag round is almost as powerful as the .500 Mag and the .460 will shoot the .45 Long Colt, the .454 Casull as well as the .460 S&W Magnum round.

From the Corbon Site
S&W .460 Mag 300 gr 1750 fps 2041 ft/lbs of energy JHP
S&W .460 Mag 325 gr 1650 fps 1965 ft/lbs of energy Bonded Core
S&W .460 Mag 395 gr 1525 fps 2040 ft/lbs of energy Hard Cast

S&W .500 Mag 350 gr 1600 fps 1990 ft/lbs of energy JHP
S&W .500 Mag 385 gr 1700 fps 2544 ft/lbs of energy Bonded Core
S&W .500 Mag 400 gr 1625 fps 2491 ft/lbs of energy Hard Cast

If I had the money I would buy a 5" Model 460V but I can't scrape up that kind of cash. Even if I did I couldn't afford the ammo to shoot out of it!! LOL

It's a very hot looking revolver for sure.... Put a really nice set of grips on it and you're good to go! http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=11101&storeId=10001&productId=44954&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=15707&isFirearm=Y

FWIW, the .500S&W can be loaded up to 3,000lbs of ME, that's more than many 30-06 rifle loads! While the 460 is impressive it doesn't seem to have that much on the .454 Casull. Which is plenty enough handgun for anything you'd need a handgun for, I'm very content with my Ruger SRH .454 .

The 500 is a blast to shoot , it goes with me everytime i go to the range. i shoot the 400gr magtech for target , and i have shot a few of the 350 gr hornady which are 1900 fps and 2805 ft lb's they had no kick at all.

i got another 50 cal revolver on its way , a freedom arm in 50 AE

later on when i get some brass build up for the 500 S&W im going to try some reloading with my uncle
