I'm looking for a 6 round K frame snub nose (no longer than 2.25") in .38 Spl. I know there are no current S&W, Taurus or Ruger Models but Rossi makes a 2" model. Even though Rossi isn't total junk I'm looking for something with a little better quality. What older S&W model will fit the bill that I might pick up for a reasonable price used?

Sorry for a question that's probably obvious to some of you but I'm new to all of this.

In searching (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=2947027#post2947027) for a 3" K-frame, I've seen a bunch of 2" advertised. "Reasonable" price? That's in the eye of the beholder.

Here's one (http://www.collectorsfirearms.com/admin/product_details.php?itemID=12237), from CollectorsFirearms. You should also check Gunbroker, Gunsamerica etc.

Good luck in your search.

Thank you MCgunner...
I thought I read that here before but wasn't sure. Nothing wrong with a M10, that's for sure. Do they cost a lot used? Can they be found in fairly good shape for a reasonable price.

I heard as well that Rossi was not a total junk and those I handled seemed well made. If you get one in 357 and shoot 38s, you will most likely not have quality problems with it.

There are K-frames model 66 out there, mostly 2-inchers. I've got one in 3" and it's my favorite piece.

Smith & Wesson started making their Military & Police model (later called a model 10) with a 2" barrel during the middle 1930's. The also made the model 15 Combat Masterpiece with same length. Unless there is a collectable factor, shooters run from about $300.00 down with model 10's, and $350.00 down for model 15's.

I carry a j-frame sized taurus 2in and a 3in model 10 IWB. The only difference is the size of the grip. The length of the barrel is not an issue in the least, so if you can find a 3in, go for it. It's a very nice shooter.

I don't know what's currently available but used guns abound. I bought THESE (http://www.fototime.com/4ACD35299C51444/standard.jpg) two M&Ps within a month of each other and it turned out they were made within a month of each other back in 1949. Great shooters and I paid $200 and $210 for them.

If you don't want something quite that classic, I got this M64 (http://www.fototime.com/1C758B07D0C2E58/standard.jpg) about 2 months ago for $250 and it's very practical.

Saxon, you got a good deal on those M&Ps. Are they reblued, or is that original? I paid about that for one just like those, but the blueing was really worn and it had some surface rust. Guess I should have shopped around more. http://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=47947&d=1163632118

Get a new S&W Model 10, 64, or 67. Get an afrtermarket 2'' barrel (Brownells make them) and send the gun to cylinder & slide so they can install the barrel. Or just find a local gunsmith. I suppose you would also have to get a new ejector rod. Cost around $700.

SaxonPig,
That Model 64 is just what I'm looking for. Thank you for the advice...

I'm in need of a set of original, walnut RB grips with the S&W logo for a '72
2" model 10-5 that is factory nickeled.:scrutiny: :)

A S&W Model 64 is just the ticket. Here's mine:

barrel length is 1 7/8"

Model 10 snubbies are still out there for good prices.
I bought this blued Model 10 for $200, and the nickel one for $179.
I did have to put original grips back on the nickel gun.

Saxon, those old M&Ps are definitely out of fashion. If you will send them to me, I will dispose of them properly.
Since it is the holiday season, I'll split the postage with you. :)

Hawkeye, I'll dispose of your's for you too!

-was that barrel taken off a J or cut down? They never made the M64 in 1 7/8, did they?

S&W calls it a 2" barrel but the measurement is always nominal, meaning it can vary a little one way or the other. In fact, most S%W 2" barrels will actually measure 1 & 7/8" but we still call them 2" (at least most of us do).

On of the old M&Ps I pictured above is reblued. I didn't realize until after I got it home or I wouldn't have paid so much for it.

I thought I read that here before but wasn't sure. Nothing wrong with a M10, that's for sure. Do they cost a lot used?

Seems to be a regional thing unless you have an FFL and can order one. Around here, K and J frame used Smiths start at around 300 for a well worn M10 4", at least at the gun shows and gun shops. That's why I bought a 3" Taurus M66 a few weeks ago at a local show. There were a bunch of K frame Smiths, but I coulda got a new one for the prices. I know a gun shop here that sells 640s for $305. I can't complain, the Taurus was a great find, accurate and IWB friendly.

Yeah, if you're going to IWB (assume IWB with a K frame size gun), a 3" barrel works just as well as a 2" and a lot better than a 4" when you sit down.

I know a guy, friend in the gun club here, that has an FFL and I could probably order one for 25 bucks fee. He is retired and does it for extra cash as well as teaches handgun CCW classes. But, I don't like ordering, especially USED guns. I like to pick 'em up and check 'em out first.

I could rebarrel my M10 to 2", but I'd really rather have a round butt. I like the round butt on snubbies.
