The U.S. 1917 and the English Pattern 14 are basically the same rifle, with the exception of the P 14 having a magnum sized bolt face. I built one into a 300 Win Mag rifle. The action is more than adequate to handle magnum calibers.

I'd tend to stick with the .532/.515 belted mags and not the .532/.540 nonbelted ubermags; the 1917 action is strong but it's not the newest and most consistent in terms of steel quality.

I'd especially be wary of Eddystones vs. Rem or Winnie versions, since the Eddystones have a statistically significantly greater likelihood of having been heat-treated a bit too hot (not like the '03, tho) and having had the barrel overtorqued upon installation. The combination of these two issues is such that the receiver ring can develop microcracks when you pull the old barrel off. It doesn't happen all the time, but it is a known issue with Eddys.

If at all possible - pay the $$ to have the receiver magnafluxed before you reuse it.

But have you considered the .338 Federal, or the .338 A-Square? They would give you some serious balistics, in an easy shooting platform, that is good for a lot of game.

I don't think you could do no better than the ol' .300 Winchester. It's still very popular. If you decide to sell the rifle later on it would be the most marketable.........Essex

I was hog hunting in TX 2 weeks ago with this round. I borrowed a Remington Model 700, and what a job it did!
