5.56 ammo price check

So where is the best place to buy bulk brass-cased .223/ 5.56 at the moment?

I can't find anything under $200/ 1000 except Wolf. I just bought 1K of Wolf for my Saiga, but now I need 1K of decent brass-cased 5.56 for my AR.

Is there a better deal than the Radway Green on Sportsmans Guide? Also, please note that I can't look at most online gun sites at work because of my company's filtration software.

Thanks for the help.

The days of $200/1,000 round cases are long gone. $250 is about the right price with shipping.

Off the top of my head, there's Ammoman,AIM Surplus and Natchez. Also check the Equipment Exchange at AR15.com.

Natchez prices are theoretically under $200 for XM193, but they never have it in stock...

Sportsman's guide has SS109 at $151/720. Comes with can, strippers, and bandos.

I just recived my SG shipment of .223. Price was right, but not a single stripper clip guide to be found. I have just ordered my 1st .223 rifle ever, so I don't really know much about bulk .223 purchases, but I would think that out of 4 cans of ammo, there would be atleast one f'n' guide.

Oh well. The ammo looks good otherwise.

I don't think there are any good prices on .223, only less-bad prices. I've started reloading .223 to save a few bucks. However, try here:

My local shop had some British SS109 with a headstamp that reads, "RORG 89" and has a NATO symbol. I picked up a box at $130/ 500 rounds. I know, hardly a great price, but hopefully it's decent ammo.

Anyone know what grain bullet this ammo has? It came loose in a cardboard box.

That is British Radway Green.

62gr with steel penetrator.

Thanks. Is it good, bad, will it blow up my AR?

As a general rule it appears to be OK ammo. Some people have had problems with their guns short cycling. Some have the problem my AR has with it, extraction issues.

For some reason this is the only ammo I have tried that my gun doesn't like. The shell gets stuck in the chamber so tight that the extractor tears a chunk of the rim off trying to get it out.

This is the exception though. My buddies have ARs that will eat the stuff up all day while I am knocking shells out with a rod.

The Radway works fine in a Saiga .223.

But then, that's a Kalashnikov action. I think that'll eat anything short of vaguely .223-shaped rocks and not complain. :D

To put things in perspective, the cheapest I can find components to load new 5.56 is about $190 per thousand for M193 and M855 about $220.

Of course, you can do it cheaper with pulled/demilled surplus components but that is kind of comparing apples to oranges a bit.

Reloading your fired cases is where the savings are at. Slightly under $100 per thousand the second time around. Reloading is good for shooting!

Oh, and the cautions about Radway Green ARE valid. My Varminter refuses to cycle fully using them...while the PLR-16 eats them up with gusto. So, it depends on the gun for sure. Would recommend trying some first to see if your gun runs well on them before buying a bunch. It would suck major to shoot an entire case manually loading each one.

I'm also looking at this round through Sportsmans Guide. Does anyone run this through a Bushmaster and had problems?

Thanks.

Is the "Monarch" stuff at Academy any good? Its on sale this week for $2.87 for boxes of 20, or something around there.

Sam Adams

Monarch is Russian. I wouldn't be putting that stuff through my AR, but I suppose that laying in a supply for SHTF purposes wouldn't hurt.

Well, the Radway Green '89 headstamp works great through my RRA. 150 rounds in 1 day without a single hickup of any kind.

Poor jackrabbits didn't have it so lucky.

I scored 1k of Federal Hollow Point ammo at my local Wal Mart for $109 after sales tax. Don't ask me why, but they had it on red tag sale.

Wal-Mart can just BAFFLE you, sometimes. I've seen $150 Weatherby/Howa bolt-guns in .30-'06, some $4.00/box Federal Premium .30-'06 ammo, .22LR ammo that was gravel-cheap. All at different times, stores, seasons. Weird. Just go look, every time you're there. 'Cause you never know when it'll be your lucky day.

Would these be good for plinking purposes? How accurate would they be, and is this a decent price?

That's the Radway Green mentioned elsewhere on this thread.

They work fine for me in a Saiga .223, but YMMV. They're Brit military-issue steel penetrator core, so you'd just want to make sure you have a thick backstop like a hill to shoot at, I'd think.

I can pick up .223 (Rem) at Wally World all day long for $5.43 a box (that's 27 cents); the Federal bluebox (HP) stuff is . . . about 26 cents.

I can (sometimes) pick up Federal red box (FMJ) at Sportsman's Warehouse for $5 a box (25 cents).

So far, I haven't found anything I can order by mail that will save me significant bucks after shipping (and sometimes "membership") is factored in.

If anyone knows who can get .223/5.56 shipped to Nevada and get it here FOB for under 23 cents a round, I'd be interested.

Right now, I can stock up incrementally for a few bucks a week. If I could land 1k for under $220 -- to my door -- I'd be a little ahead.

Couple of guys I work with scored gun show bags for about 18 cents a round. Trouble is, it wouldn't feed in their ARs. It MICed out all over the place.

Once summer comes, this is going to become more important.

Some kind of disease of attrition affects my ammo stocks during the summer.

How much is shipping for ammo at sportsmans guide? I am about to purchase that 720 rd ammo can for 169, and can't find a shipping price.

BTW, I am going to start reloading here soon, will this stuff be suitable for that?

As for computers which block gun topics, several hotels such as certain Hol. Inns (downtown Sioux Falls, SD) and even the downtown Little Rock Doubletree Hotel won't permit any gun websites:cuss:, but there can be a gun website which knows 'escape and evasion'. This is on the free computers provided in the Business Centers.

"JGsales" also should have a good price on Wolf .223. Cabelas stopped their sale on .223 last week, but good to see that it is back.
