Memorial Day Salute

Way back when the M16A1 was new, I did my time.

Can't say I really wanted to, but enlisting made more sense than a draft slot, though, as it turned out, I was among the last "volunteers" before the draft ended, and no, I wouldn't have gone if it hadn't been in place.

No combat, just three years of wasted time and misery, enlightened by many of those who served with me. Followed by three and a half more years of NG: they always forget to tell you something, and the local reserve unit I would have been subject to was headed to Alaska, in January!

For those who honorably serve, or have done so, thanks for joining our society.

As for me, I'm taking out my composite A2, with the legal semiauto lower but a borrowed A2 upper, out to the back yard range, fully armed with a 70's Colt 20 round mag, very soon to be expended.

It ain't much of a salute, but it's what I can do.

And the best to all of you.

Wish I had some ammo and it was legal to do a firing salute(too close to the city). However I thank all the vets out there, living and dead. They placed the good of society above their own lives. They helped protect those who sometimes spit on them and there are few callings more noble.

Our armed forces have my highest gratitude and respect. I deeply regret not serving and am thankful to all who have or do.

Done!

And, no more today, 'cause even in the rain, granted, beyond the covered firng point, I do like to shoot, but salutes aren't to be confused with normal fires.

Again, the best to all, and, if you can, go forth and exercise your rights, and not only those connected with weapons. Speak your mind, do your town meetings, and VOTE.

Those are, so far as I know, the best memorials to those who've gone before, and, maybe, the best prevention for having others to do so again.
