BP buying question

I've been looking at a few websites that sell a variety of muzzle loaders for reasonable prices. There are no restriction to buying them. I have one simple question. If you've purchased a black powder rifle or pistol, how was it shipped? Did it require a signiture, was it marked as a firearm? I am never home and often have things shipped to work. My boss and the secretary don't mind, I just don't want a box with GUN written on it or anything, incase someone other than the secretary gets it or one of the anti-types sees it. I don't want it shipped home because no-one's ever home and our mailman has been known to leave packages on the door or at the neighbor's even when a sig was required.

I bought one of the $70 guns from CVA's website. It came in a plain brown box, no obvious gun markings on the outside. No sig requried, found it on the front porch when I got home from work, just like all the other pakcages I get. Gun was in an inner box with all the usual markings.
Best thing to do is pick up the phone and call the people you are going to order from, and ask them about that. I'm sure you aren't the first with this concern. Anything that says "gun" also says "Steal me!", so I bet the box is about as well-marked as that blow-up doll you ordered last month :)

So you're the one who stole it off my porch!:neener:

I'll be looking at a different site since Dixie has a "we don't answer direct questions" policy. Something about their secretary being to buzy to want my money. Any places you've had good luck with?

A month ago I ordered a Austin & Halleck 420. I received it in a box with huge lettering saying "Austin & Halleck, Gun Crafters" I still can't believe it made it here. Great gun by the way. 1/2 price while they last.

I have ordered from Dixie, CVA, and Traditions and they all were on my porch when I got home from work...no signature. However, I recently purchased two 1861 Navy Colts from Uberti via the History Store.com and someone over 21 had to be home to sign for them.....so it would seem that it depends on the company. I would, in a way prefer to sign for them to avoid having them stolen off my porch. All the boxes however had no indication of what was inside...so I would feel comfortable receiving them at work. It is interesting that these can be delivered in the mail. From what I have read, Black Powder Guns are not considered to be firearms (strange, I know) because they cannot fire a pre-loaded primed case with a bullet attached to it. I have not tested this theory by taking one to an airport though....lol.

The word "gun" doesn't generally appear on the box, unless it's in the name of the business, as in "Dixie Gun Works". Some require a signature, and some don't. It depends on the dealer.

Just got this response from dixie (only took 7 days, this time of year that is good)

Dear Customer:
We packaged the guns in a brown box with only our shipping label attached
which only has D.G.W. and our address with our logo. If you prefer you can
have your package shipped and no signature would be required however if the
package can be delivered to your work this is so much better.
Thank you,
DGW

So my question is answered, and my order will be placed on payday, unless I buy a modern pistol instead:evil:

when your 60 year old 9mm decides to shoot parts of it's self downrange instead on a bullet it's time to get a new handgun. And the indoor range by work won't allow blackpowder:neener:
Heck I'll probably get both.

It's the only legal way to get two handguns in one month here anyway:banghead:

Kungfuhippie. Get a cartridge conversion cylinder for your BP revolver and have the best of both worlds: black powder and cartridge firing gun for the total cost of a cartridge revolver. Double your fun for about the same cost.

Now what's the fun in that:neener:

Yeah, that'll be on the list for if I take a noob out shooting and bring a bp revolver. First gun I shot was a BP rifle as a boy scout. Then we went to the marine base and I got to shoot an m16 (including burst) then I went gun dormant for 8 years...
