Illinois state police hard at work fighting crime...NOT

While on the way home from work friday I had an encounter with a road rage maniac. Usually I set my cruise at 75 (speed limit 65) on I-57 and ride the right lane usually being passed by and getting dirty looks because I guess I am not violating the law fast enough. At one point (this is in Kankakee county) I had to pass a semi, this may take approx 2 seconds but this was not fast enough for the loon that was behind me. This middle aged guy in a Saturn (Something bothers me about people that drive that car)starts tailgating me, flashing his lights and waving his arms, now usually I will not move over for people like this, reason being is that the second I get a half a carlength in front of the semi, Saturn boy is whipped into the left lane and passing me at the speed of light. So as Saturn boy passes me he is yelling some catchy phrases that cant be repeated here, and as he passes he flashes a badge and motions me to the side of the road. Now since I know that Saturn doesnt build a state police cruiser I give the standard inappropriate gesture and rest my hand on my cased 45 on the seat. No CCW in Illinois but I am carrying legally. I guess he gave up and drove off into hyperspace when he saw that I was disregarding his authority. Now the important part of the story, this guy has done this to me before and I am starting to wonder if he is following me-maybe this is a coincidence but I am unsure at this point, so I write his plate number down and call the ISPD. Thier response was unbelievable.
I explained to the brainstem on the other end that this indivdual was doing this and it was not the first time. I told her about the badge, she said, "well...maybe he is a police officer." I told her that I didnt feel that a police officer would act in this manner especially on several occasions. She asks if I could see what department his badge was from, I explained to her that I could not see this information because at 75mph I tend to pay attention to my driving instead of reading small print going by at 100 plus MPH. She then asks me, "what would you like me to do about it?" I said how about stopping the guy and see what his problem is. Again she said, " you know he may very well be a police officer." and I told her that he may very well be a law enforcement officer and that he may also be some NUT!!!! She asked me if i would like to file a complaint, I said yes that I would. I am now transfered on hold for 20 mins wating for another officer to pick up the phone and hear my story. At this point no one had answered and I was at my exit, where there is a ISP station right off the highway. I am very aggravated now and decided to deal with the situation on Tues. becasue I was going away for the weekend. I told my wife about this, she has also seen this loon (we carpool together) and she was also disturbed by the ISP response and lack of concern. Perhaps I should of said that he was Arabic and waving a gun, and he had an NRA sticker on his car, that should bring them running.

Ah...dispatchers.

It is nice to know that the ones we manage to fire get jobs elsewhere.

Yeah, definately file a report. If he's actually a cop (doubtful), his department needs to know. If he's not a cop, he needs charged with...something. ;) I'm not sure what the elements of 'impersonating a LE officer' are in illinois, but he might be close to them.

Also, be advised, unless IL is quite different than Ohio, there will be zilch that they can do about the way he drives, unless a cop observes him. If you stop to think about this for a moment, you'll likley figure out why thats a good thing, in the grander scheme of things.

Yeah, I would try and contact a Sgt by the name of Linc Hamilton, he's kind of a regualr on WGN Radio with Spike, he's a senior Sgt. with ISP and has always been an upstanding source for the ISP.

thanks for the advice, I could care less about the way the guy drives, it was the badge and motioning to the side of the road that bothered me. Imagine what would happen if some naive 17 year old girl pulls to the side of the road, and it turns out the guy isnt a cop and is some nut.

Dead on.

I had to throw the traffic caveat in there because LEOs get flagged down every day by concerned citizens about how "that guy there is driving like a serious <insert pejorative here>!!!!!" Now, sure...we make contact with the guy (assuming the a number of legal concerns are met). But if he hasn't done something illicit in our presence, he is on his way without a ticket.

This often makes the 'concerned citizen' extremely angry.

*sigh*

Someone in Champaign county was doing this around 6-7 years ago. I believe he raped his victims. Certainly close enough that Kankakee isn't that far for him to be on the prowl.

Also, around that time, there was a young divorced woman who disappeared, leaving only her car behind (like might happen if she got into an "officer's" car). They fished pieces of her body out of Clinton lake. Her Ex and boyfriend both had good alibis, IIRC.

Anyone from central IL have any more info on this case?

Saintofkillers,
Send me an e-mail. I'll put you incontact with the right person in the ISP if you want to pursue this.

Police officers are very sensitive and touchy about people impersonating an officer. I'm sure someone will be interested in this.

I was victimized (the other way) by this a few years ago. Late one Saturday afternoon the Sergeant on duty on my dept called me and said; "Jeff, where have you been this afternoon?" I said working around the house and hadn't been anywhere. He then asked if my son (only had one driving at the time) had been driving my truck. I said no, it hasn't left the drive. He then explained that there was a road rage incident near town, where a guy driving a 4x4 pickup bullied a driver with a learners permit and his mom to the side of the road, flashed a badge, chewed the boy out for his driving, told mom he had the vehicle description and license plate and he was Officer White, and he'd be watching for her boy.

She drove right to our PD and filed a complaint. Turned out, it was "Officer White" from Department of Corrections (the woman finally remembered the complete description of his truck (GMC, mine's a Ford) and one of the officers working knew who it was. The report was turned over to DOC Internal Affairs and he was eventually fired (numerous other infractions this was just icing on the cake).
