I have a 357 and wanted to shoot .38 special out of it this weekend. So I called my brother to pick me up some .38 special ammo since he was out already. He comes home with Remington 38 Super Auto which will not work. So I went to Gander Mountain to see if I can swap it out, and the lady says no. It gets me mad that I have a 20 dollar paper weight sitting here. Is their any way i could sell this ammo? Also I think Gander Mountain is way too expensive. At the gun store I can get .38 special ammo for 12 dollars and Gander wants 23.99!! Anyway Gander Mountain left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I rather go to Bass Pro Shop. Anyone else deals with Gander Mountain?

I believe ammo sales are generally final from stores. You'll have to sell, trade or give it to an individual I guess.

That's not an odd policy. Every place I've shopped at won't take ammo back once it leaves the store. It is too easy for someone to pull the bullets and take/add powder.

I did the same w/ a bulk box of 20 gauge shotgun shells that was erroneously tossed in the pile of 12 gauge shells. Had to chalk it up to a loss.

Went to WalMart Tuesday to buy a brick of Federal 510. There were several individual boxes stacked on the shelf, but the clerk said "I have a full brick under the counter".

He did, but I noticed that the flap had been opened and then taped over. I squeezed the box and it felt normal.

Get home and guess what....nine boxes of .97 Federal 510 and one box of Winchester SuperX that sells for about twice that.

You would have had the same problem at Bass Pro. I wouldn't take back any ammo if you've left he store with it. How do I know you didn't take to factory stuff, and fill the box up with reloads?

The only time I was ever able to return ammo was at walmart. I diddnt pay enough attention the the ring up and when I go my reciept I paid 2$ more per box than the shelf price. The guy at the counter wouldnt help, and the section manager wouldnt help. It wasnt untill the store manager came by that they decided that I could get my money back, only thing is that the computer wouldnt let them do a return on ammo. After 10 min or so trying to fight the computer he gave up used a calculator to come up with the difference between what I paid and what I should have paid, took the money out of the register gave it to me with an extra box of ammo.

So even though the store manager wanted to give me a refund the computers were programmed to prevent him from doing so, its just a universal policy.


Edit to add: The whole agreement from the start was that I would buy back the same boxes of ammo for the shelf listed price, we were all very clear on that from the start.

So your angry at Gander Mountain because your brother screwed up and bought the wrong ammo? And if Gander Mountain is so expensive why did you let him buy his ammo there?

Once, my friend bought a 223rem wwb from walmart. When we went to the shooting range, it had 22-250 in the 223 box!

We went to walmart and told them it had 22-250 inside the 223 box. They gave him a refund.

I don't have a problem with the policy, in fact I approve.

On the other hand I've known friendly local gun stores who would cheerfully have swapped because they were friendly local gun stores - then given the return to an employee or friend willing to take a chance rather than to put it back on the shelf!

Sadly too many friendly local gun stores are gone; put out of business because Gander Mountain or Walmart cut into their business and customers didn't support better service.

Can't have it both ways.

I think it is a great policy and all stores should have it. Last thing we need is some whacko going out, buying ammo, pulling the bullet, double charging it then returning it.

Now you have an excuse to buy a .38 Super! :)

Most stores that sell ammo, are usually as is purchases; because of federal law stating that ammo return may be "tampered with". If the store clerk made a mistake selling the ammo, then it can be returned; since the manager doesn't want to deal with any liability.

I'd put your brother in a headlock and give him a "nuggy" for getting you the wrong ammo.

Ever since Gander Mountain stopped mail order sales, they have been going downhill. I go to WI every summer, and my brother in law always drags me to one, but I think in the last 3 years I have not bought a thing from them because of their ridiculous prices. The last good deal I got from them, was a Mossberg 9200 shotgun on closeout for $279.

One of the local gun stores refuses to exchange anything, be it a shirt or range bag. While I understand the ammo and firearm return policy, I got frustrated today when I tried to return an unused packaged item with receipt that was a Christmas gift which didn't fit and was unable to. I was forced to exchange it for overpriced ammo...
