I would like all of your opinions on the Benelli M4 as a soliid dependable combat shotgun.

I realize that there is a big price difference between this an 870 Express, but I am really thinking about getting one.

Plus it's cool.
:)

In all seriousness, it looks like a nice shotgun. I used to have a Super90 M1, which was great, although it had difficulty with lighter loads (while more than a couple magazines full of heavy loads left me a bit bruised).

I'm trying to figure out from Benelli's website what is different b/t the 2 models besides superficial changes.

The M1s (and M3s, Black Eagles, Montefeltros, etc.) are inertia operated. The gun must experience a certain amount of recoil to operate.

The M4 is gas operated. The gun must see a certain amount of gas pressure to operate.

Benellis are the best. If you want a Benelli, get one. You will have no regrets.

Is there a straight stock version made for this shotgun, or do they all have the pistol grip?

Looking at Benelli's 2006 catalog, the straight stock is an option for the M4. The stock, both straight and pistol grip, appear identical to the older M1/M3 stocks but I'm not entirely sure they are in fact so. The catalog shows in the parts section that the M1 nad M3 stocks are the same as the new M2s but looking at guns, the rear of the trigger guard are slightly different between the M1/M3 and M2. Maybe the part of the pistol grip stock that mates the receiver at that point is soft enought to comform to the different shapes. (Not a problem with the straight stocks.)

During the "assault weapons" ban, this shotgun was offered only with a sub normal capacity mag tube, which is why I wouldn't purchase one during the ban. Has that been increased to the normal mag capacity now that the ban is over?

I love my nova, and its the cheapest benelli makes. I bet the M4 is amazing.

TRH,
I believe the M4 has available magazine extensions.
