Whats your favorite .22LR handgun thats not one of these and why;
A.) P22
B.) Beretta Neos
C.) Ruger Mark III
D.) Browning Buckmark
I recieved a Gander Mt giftcard for Christmas and I decided to get myself a .22. The models I listed are models that I have owned, do own, or are otherwise familiar with. Id rather get something else, but if one of these is your favorite feel free to post.
Thanks :D

See if they can order you a CZ Kadet .22. Check them out on the CZ USA web site. Great guns, and something different.. Aprox. 400.00

From your list it looks like you've owned all autos. Maybe it's time for a nice 22 revolver.

With all the 22 handguns mostly in inventory, I would pick up a 22 rifle. If it had to be a handgun, it would be a S&W Model 617 revolver since I don't own one and would like to.

My favorite .22 LR pistols: S&W M41 semi-automatic or S&W 617 revolver. Both GREAT guns!!!
Good shooting and be safe.

Another vote for the 617 or 617-10. Life is simply not complete without one.

S&W M22A very accurate, but has some quirks. I've all the above you mentioned but this is the one I shoot best. OTOH because of its quirks I'd recommend one of the other four for most people.

Wally-What quirks? I like the look of the Smiths semis and the price seems about right.
Id love a Ruger Single Shot but Im not sure I dont want to be able to waste some ammo every once in a while.

I am a Big Ruger fan when it comes to .22's. Currently I have a 10/22 and a .22/45 in the house. I want another Super Single Six to replace the one I let get away years ago.
Even so I recently picked up a Cricket .22 single shot rifle for my son and I have a lead on a 4" barreled Beretta 950 in .22 short as well for him.
.22's are the kings of fun guns! :D

I love my Buckmark and also have a decent amount of time with a Mark II and a Mark III. Buy whichever one fits your hand best and don't look back.

Most annoying S&W M22A quirk is the location of the mag release on the front of the grip, sure its ambi, but its way to easy to hit and drop the mag enough to get an empty chamber on the next shot when shooting fast (steel plates).
Many of the mags have a problem where a hollow point bullet will hang on the cutouts for the mag release leading to an empty chamber on the second shot of a 10 round loading or on the third of a 10+1. I seemed to have fixed the issue by pinching the magazine at, above, and below the catch cutout with a Vice-Grip pliers so the rounds can't twist to the side in this area, have to be careful to no overdo it and block the follower's movement. The Vice-Grip pliers let you limit the amount of closure of the jaws for consistent results.
Take down is easy but if you slip the recoil spring will fly with great vigor, wear your safety glasses! The problem is worse on reassembly, three hands is a big help. Also there is a lame plastic spacer that is sort of a buffer and holds the recoil spring and rod up at the backof the frame. Gun comes with some spares, but they don't last as long as you might like. If you call or write S&W they'll send you some more, for free so far...
The barrel locking area at the back of the frame has had problems on many guns that causes the bolt to ride up leading to misfires, mine is one that had to go back, S&W service was outstanding shipping both ways on their dime, I was only out of pocket the time it took to drop it off at FedEx.
Despite the takedown issues the gun is so open its pretty easy to keep clean without disassembley, brake parts cleaner, some Q-tips, and a bore snake does a quick fast job.
So while this may sound pretty negative, the results I get shooting it more than make up for these quirks!

I don't know exactly what quirks the S&W M22A has. What I do know though... A couple of months back Gander mountain had a sale that offered the choice of either a Neos 6" or an M22a 5.5" for $199. Obviously I had to pick up one or the other.. obviously.. heh. I was unsure which one to pick, so I waited till the last day of the sale and figured I'd just pick the one that felt better. When I talked to the sales guy though, he mentioned how during the sale at least 4 or 5 m22as already had to come back to the shop to be sent back to S&W and only one Neos had been back. I don't know much about the m22A, and to be fair that may have been a fluke, but that left a bad taste in my mouth for that particular smith.

I'm pretty fond of my wife's Bersa Firestorm 22. That's a shooting little gun. It likes HV ammo, like CCI mini mags best.

Ill take a look at the Bersas, hadnt thought about those yet. Not getting a P22, my fiance likes hers though, and Im the one who bought it for her so its not like Im against them. Its just that I have hands that are entirely too big.

Agree with the others - you've got the autos, time for a wheelgun. If Gander Mt. sells used try for a S&W K-22/17/18. If new is a must then I'd look at the S&W 617.

At the moment I dont actually own any of these. I have owned shot and generally spent time with all of these. I dont have a .22 at the moment though.
Id really love a Single Six but I just cant help feeling like Id miss rapid firing at least every once in a while. I may just get a SS but whenever I decide on it I remember that at the end of my range session I like to waste fifty or so bullets just for the heck of it.

Given your criteria any of the major manufactures .22lr semi-autos will have to do.
You're going to be limited to 10rd mags, so load up on mags while you are at it.
My preference is Ruger MKII/MKIII, 22/45 or Browning Buckmark in the reasonably priced catergory.
Or if you've got the money to spend the S&W 41 is a super nice gun, but will cost you nearly $1K.
Otherwise, I would buy a Ruger 10/22 and pick up some 25rd magazines. Then you can really blow through some ammo quick.

I don't have the P22 but I own the other three and my next 22 pistol purchase will either be a Ruger Single Six or something that I buy on a whim because the deal is too good to pass up. :)

Have a good worker search their stores for a used K-22 or 617 or the like. I'm sure they have one in inventory somewhere. My brother got a 22A for Christmas; I'll let you know what its like in a few days.

I noticed a big price difference on the SW website for the 22A but without much detail on what is different about them. Gander has a special for a $199 22A and that could either be a good deal or regular price depending.
Anyone know the difference between the different 22As?
As it stands if I cant find the difference between them Im likely gonna get either a Kadet Kit or a SW .22 revolver(if I can find one below $400)

Here is the current lineup from S&W web site:
http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=11101&storeId=10001&categoryId=15710&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=15708&top_category=15708
The one I have is not shown, stainless 7" fluted bull barrel, fiber optic front sight, I think I gave $260+tax for it, might have been a closeout. Prices shown on the web site approach 2X what I see on the models I recognize at local gun shows.

How about a 1911 with a .22 conversion kit?
Monkeybear
December 26, 2006, 12:04 AM
A 1911 would be great but a bit much, the giftcard is only for $100 and comes with two $10 coupons. Id rather not spend more than $400 total.
