Welcome to THR! ;)
I would go w/ a Glock - I'm not a XD fan so this is an easy question.

I currently own an XD45 Tactical. I use to own an XD40 Service Model.
If you are thinking about the XD40, I would urge you to first go to a range (or borrow a friends) and shoot it. Because of the snapiness of the .40 round and the size of my hands, my thumb kept getting hit by the take down bar in a painful manner. I had have no such problem with the XD45. I mention this, not to rag on the XD40 or .40 cal weapons, but to point out the classic issue of handgun fit.
The second issue to be concerned with is parts availablity for the XD series of pistols. Given the potential for a gun ban of some sort being passed in the next 2 years, I would really recommend the Glock over XD.
Both are fine guns, but due to the glocks longer History, it is the better bet.

XD45, you will not regret it.

I'd handle both and see which fits my hand best, which one points most naturally, etc. Both companies offer fine firearms and either brand will serve you well.
If you do go with a .45 ACP chambered gun I think that Springfield did a better job with it than Glock. SA kept the magazine narrower so the XD 45 has a much narrower grip that's closer to the 9mm/40 S&W/357 SIG frames. If you look at a 9mm the midsize Glock 19 and SA XD Service, each with their approx 4" bbls, both offer better concealability than the G17, but still handle well as range/fun guns. Sticking with 9mm or 45 ACP keeps your ammo supplies simplified. If you go with the G19 you can also use the G17's magazines in it. I suppose I'm a fan of compatability and simplicity.

Just to throw in my .02 . .
If you want a .45 then I think the Springfield XD is a hands down winner. (assuming it fits your hands)
If you want a .40 then it comes down to which one you like better, fits better, etc. IMHO there is no real advantage to either but you'd save a few $ with the Springfield.
Have a good one,

For me the answer is easy.
If you're looking for .40, the Glock doesn't have a fully supported chamber and the .40 XD does.
If you're looking for .45, then you can't beat the capacity of the XD.
So XD either way and you're ahead of the Glock on build, capacity, and price.

All the new Glocks do have a fully supported chamber.
If money is tight get the XD, if that is not the case spend the extra and get the Glock but either will serve you well. I recently had to decide between the two and after much research, shooting both, and talking to several people most be LEO's I got a new Glock 19 a couple of weeks ago and couldn't be happier.

I've got both a Glock and an XD. Although I'm likely to sell the Glock soon to be replaced with another XD, it's not due to a flaw in the Glock, but rather because the Glock doesn't fit me well. If you like your other Glock, (and especially if it fits better than the Kimber) I'd stick with the platform. If the Kimber grip fits your hand better, you'll probably like the XD better.

If it's for everyday carry, definitely go with the Glock - the XD is a bit big and heavy. I've got the XD in 40 and two Glocks (26 and 36). I'd much rather shoot the XD at the range, but the Glocks conceal better and don't drag at the waistband.
Like most who have posted replies, I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I own both and I can tell you with certainty you can't go wrong either way. I switch between my G19, 23 and XD-45 Compact. I bought the XD to fill a gap in my collection. Glock does not have a 45 ACP that met my needs and the XD-45 Compact covered it. If you are looking for a 45 I would highly recommend an XD, if you are looking for a 40 then I would go with the G23. I like the G19 best, Low recoil and 15+1 on the ammo. If an external safety in an issue the the XD-40 is your winner.

Landor,
Why would you NP3 an already Melonited slide?
Landor
December 26, 2006, 09:28 PM
It's not about rust it's about color or lack of it. The stock finish does not last long and starts to ware off due to holster ware. The NP3 is like Teflon. Not only is it so slippery you barely have to oil anything coated in it, it last a long long time and will not show holster ware.

take a very serious look at the XD. when I was doing my weapons qualifications some years back (then a parole agent) I was one of 2 with the XD40, just about all others were glocksters. we shot from 1750 to 2000 rounds over four days and the XD's performed without incident....there were more than a few issues with the glocks. that was enough proof for me to make the XD my anytime carry and there were a few glocksters who eventually did the switcharoo as well. the glock is a fine weapon, IMHO, I just believe the XD is better technology and ergonomically true. that all being said, shoot both and see for yourself.
Landor: where are u getting he NP3 done and how much does it run?

IIRC Robar is the only place that does NP3. I could be wrong though

I was a potential XD fan, but that was before I had to deal with Springfield Armory on trying to get a .357 XD. I would have had better luck looking for diamonds protected by killer gray gorillas in the depths of the congo. XD's are fine firearms, but the hassle Springfield puts people through is rediculous in my opinion :fire: . Go for the Glock, easy to find, you can buy parts for it, and 9 out of 10 people are certified Glock armorers these days ( lol ), not that you will ever need them, but it's reassuring anyway.

Anyone who thinks the newcomer from Croatia is a handsdown winner against any model of Glock pistol is crazy. What faults does the glock have that put it in number 2? To me the XD seems like a frankenstein hybrid consisting of design features of a 1911, glock and sig, set on a platform that is extremely top heavy.

Hello Kmtirish,
SA-XD45 Call me crazy I think its beautiful. The fit, feel, and accuracy is superb! Also; for some reason every time I take a look at it the Edgar Winters Group song "Frankenstien" comes to mind;)
I also like Glocks:)
