I've been told that if I sell a handgun to someone out=of-state that I can mail it directly to the buyers FFL, and don't need an FFL in my ststae to send to their FFL.

True?

Any references to BATF that makes this clear?

From the ATF's faq:
http://www.atf.treas.gov/firearms/faq/index.htm

(B9) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by carrier? [Back]

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by carrier to a resident of his or her own state or to a licensee in any state. A common or contract carrier must be
used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract
carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm. [18 U. S. C. 922( a)( 2)( A) and 922( e), 27 CFR 178.31]

Also check your state laws. There may be a state restriction. For example, here in New York I can't mail a gun to anyone. I have to go through the licensing division first.

I'm sure though, that if that were the case you would know it.

That also depends on the FFL you are shipping too. Some of them won't accept the transfer from you, only from another FFL.
