Okay, I've been going back and forth on what to get my next Encore barrel in. I think I'm going to get either a .308 or a .30-06, depending upon what is in stock where when I buy. Either one will be a 24" stainless barrel. I've settled on these two strictly from ammo availability and verstality. They are both more powerful than truly needed, but I've fired enough '06 ammo at Highpower matches (and .45-70 and .44 Magnum for fun) to not really worry about that so much now.

Now I'm trying to decide what to put on it for a scope. I was thinking a 2-7 or maybe a fixed 4x, but I can get a VX-I 3-9x40mm for about $155. This is, like the cartridge, more powerful than needed for 90%+ of my hunting area. (Actually, at 3-4x it would serve well.) I figure this wil put me into a new barrel/scope combo for under $500, and it will be ready for anything I may face, ever, anywhere.

Anyway, I was wondering what the experiences with the VX-I is. I had the last generation of this scope on a Remmy M700 Mountain (2-7x33mm). I believe the model I had was equivalent to the current Rifleman line. It held zero and was a great deal for the money, IMO. I'd really have no qualms about buying another one. (Guess I answered my own question, huh?)

What are others' experiences?

(And, okay, it helps that the scope is made stateside. And the warranty makes me comfortable too.)

I've got this one on my Marlin 336. Couldn't ask for a better small scope. Great light gathering at dusk.

I have found the lower end of the Leopold line to be a far better value than many other scope brands.
I know so many guys who continue to spend $80-$150 for some china brand scopes that perform fair to poor because they think all leopolds are $600.
I admit I have several different Simmonds scopes that I paid $99 each for that get some use from time to time but I have never been disapointed with any Leopold scope.

Supposed to be the same as the older VariX-II. No one ever complained about the VariX-II.
