How many people carry guns who do not really like them?

By that I do not mean people who carry as a job requirement. I mean to ask how many people choose to carry a gun because of a perceived need -- despite a fear of, dislike of, or even indifference toward them.

We have all heard various “reasons” for carrying. When asked why I do, my favorite response is something like this: “I am too old and too gimpy to either fight or run as I once could, but I still have my pride and independence. I am too proud and independent to give up my freedom to go where I will, to hide behind walls, and to go out only in flocks of timorous of sheeple — and then only to non-existent “safe places” as gun-grabbers constantly advise.” Sometimes I simply say, “I carry because I choose to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.” I suspect, however, that those responses leave out an essential fact.

I carry whenever doing so is permissible, but then I like guns and do not consider carrying to be a bothersome inconvenience. Despite my going into Detroit nearly everyday, I doubt that I would carry often or perhaps even ever if I did not like them. The warmth and comfort that I now feel when I have that weight at my side just would not be there.

Consider an opposite example. I consider my cell phone to be only for calling 9-1-1, AAA , or my wife: all defensive uses. I don’t like using phones, so I constantly forget to charge my cell phone – or forget to take it off the charger when I leave home. I suspect that if I disliked guns, even if I had one for home defense, even if I were licensed, I would leave it at home.

Because of the odds against a substantial win, I don’t buy lottery tickets. If the only reason for carrying were defensive, I would likely not carry because I would see the odds that I would need a firearm for self-defense to be just as low.

To answer the “Why” question honestly, perhaps I need to preface any other answer with “Because I like guns, and. . . .”

Obviously the vast majority of people reading your post like guns, or they would not be here. There are some people who carry for work and do not like guns. Some Police and Security guards are good examples.

Some cops are so clueless about their guns, they don't even know what caliber it is. :uhoh: To these people, the gun is just part of their uniform. These are the ones you hope never have to use it, because they might end up dead or killing the wrong person. :(

For a long time that would have been me. Now my natural geekishness has extended to guns, but for the most part they're just expensive tools.

After carrying one in the jungles of SE Asia, using them, and seeing them used, I no longer veiw them as "cool" or even have enthusiasm remaining for them. I'm glad for that, and though I do not dislike them, for the most part they are just objects to me. "Neutral" if you will.

I had looked forward to returning home to the "world;" i.e. the good old US of A. Civilization where I could relax and go about the everyday persuits of life -without violence everywhere.

Now, it's the twentyfirst century, and I find myself armed again! This time out of what I consider prudence or necessity anyway.

So, I would rather not carry. However, I am grateful to have the Constitutional guarranteed right to be able to do so; in light of the violent situations in what at one time was a much more peaceful land, and I do also believe that by many of us doing so, the criminal element will be limited in the rampages of violence that are occurring now.

I admire a good firearm for being accurate, reliable, rugged, etc., but my thoughts through the day are spent on what I consider more important things in this life. I ignore rather than forget that I have one.

When asked why I carry, I repy: because I fought too hard and long to stay alive -to give my life or the lives of my loved ones over to today's remorseless
criminals without a fight. I intend to stay alive, and any man who attempts to end my life will forfeit his own in the attempt if I can do it by any means.

So, it's the being required or forced to carry by circumstances that I dislike; not the inanimate firearm itself.

While guns, shooting, reloading, etc is something I really enjoy, I would rather things were such that I didn't have to carry a gun.
I've long since outgrown the idea that carrying a gun is "cool" and dragging a hunk of metal around where ever I go is a pain in the butt.

But like James T Thomas, I've lived too long to let some low life get away with doing me harm now.

I don't like guns, but I don't dislike them either. I do, however, like to shoot. I'm the same way with cars. I don't like or dislike cars. I do, though, really like to drive. I don't care if it's a Ford or a Ferrari. Makes no difference so long as it drives.

My wife has a neutral assessment of firearms. She just got her permit because we've now got 2 small children instead of just 1, and she realized she'd be completely unable to protect them both - either by running or standing to fight (she's small and would be holding one of them anyway) against a human or a dog.

My s/o is much the same. She has no interest in the guns themselves, but she loves shooting.

In this part of the world, I believe most who carry like firearms in general and their pick of carry guns in particular. I had lunch yesterday with a deputy sheriff who had very recently had to shoot a pit bull off of his left leg. He was quite happy to have had the pistol. I carry what I want as my CCW is non restricted as to caliber, make, serial number etc. One day it may be my Taurus PT145 the next my XD45 and then my Witness 10mm. I shoot them all every weekend to the tune of at least a couple of boxes each which works out to at least 300 rounds a week. My Dillon 550 is happy also.:)
