This is a great little hatchet for chopping firewood, etc., but I got a few dings in the edge. Any suggestions for sharpening? I have a japanese waterstone and am thinking of using that. Have also seen these round sharpening stone made by Gransfors but not sure I want to spring for it when I have this waterstone.

Get an axe file and take the dings out..Lee Valley has a nice Nicholson axe file...I use a waterstone on most of my axes but just got a G.B. axe stone for Christmas....I still think I will use the waterstones at home though.....just my 2 cents.

I'll go out on a limb and say that this axe is the best axe ever for woods cruising , camping, self defense ect. I bought mine for $60 shipped 10 years ago and now they are $70- still a great deal IMHO for a top quality handforged axe.

Beyond some rough work to straighten dings, I leave it to a pro. What most folks consider axe sharpening is really just tool sharpening, and a G-B deserves better. I have one guy and one guy only in town I take mine to. I've tried doing it myself and taking it to others and the results have been crude. A sharpener who knows what he's doing can give you whatever edge you want, for everything from root and stump work to soft or hard wood felling.

I'd use a file to get the nicks out, then use a medium stone to get the proper edge and bevel. strop/etc to your liking.
That's what 'ol TMM does, anyway. I enjoy getting perfect edges on my knives, but i usually keep it to a medium stone for my hatchet [need a good edge for splitting kindling], and just a file for an axe [partly because the ax i use is crap and dulls fast. but it works.
