I've read quite a few threads about keeping a rifle in the trunk just in case... I carry daily even though I live in what most would consider a low risk enviorment, out in the country, low crime rate etc. I wonder about having a rifle handy. Do the advantages of carying one everywhere with you outblalance the maintanance such as bringing it in everynight and unloading wiping down...( #1 I have kids so all weapons get locked up #2 dont want to leave in truck to arm potential robber.) Do many of you cary some kind of long gun with you in the vehicle??
Thanks
Mike

I keep a rifle in the trunk, along with a good supply of ammo for it. It doesn't take up much space in a soft case, and like I said before...if'n when I ever need it, I reckon I'll be mighty glad it's there. ;)
My current trunk gun is a Steyr Mannlicher M95 straight-pull carbine, along with about 200 rounds of 8x56R Hungarian on Mannlicher en-bloc clips. Easy to load, fast to operate, packs a wallop, and only cost me $90.

One of my job duties used to be doing the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) submission for my Department. Sitting around once a month going over the crimes and items that UCR tracks wasn't the funnest thing I've ever done but I did learn a few things.
One of the most sobering was the total $ worth of items stolen from vehicles often exceeded the total for items stolen during burglaries for that month.
I now drive a Jeep Wrangler which about as secure as a pup tent so I rarely leave anything in it that I can't bear to lose and I'm not sure I'd chance carrying one regularly even if I had a vehicle with a trunk.
That being said, I for one feel better armed with a long gun somewhere near by. Maybe some low dough surplus bolt gun with the bolt secured somewhat seperately would be a good idea.

What about carrying a 1911 or Glock and keeping one of those carbine conversions in the trunk or under the seat.
It's not a complete weapon so you won't be arming some lowlife who breaks into your car and safe storage legal issues can be avoided.
I wonder how useful it is though. Range and hitting power just aren't there.
