i see these "no gunsmithing" scope mounts for my mosing on ebay for 13 bucks? will the bolt handle hit the scope with these installed? i see the ones that come with the new bolt handle for 40 bucks. the cheap ones say they replace the rear sight.

what do you guys have?

You should post the link so we can see it. The mount you want is like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Russian-Mosin-Nagant-91-30-sniper-scope-MOUNT-BASE_W0QQitemZ110072113675QQihZ001QQcategoryZ10954QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem With that mount no bolt modifications are necessary.

it looks like you need to drill and tap two holes, but i like the way this one looks the best when finished. i dont care about a couple holes, this isnt a collecters piece.

There is a guy who makes Mosin mounts that fit into the regular rear sight base that makes it so you can continue to use the issue straight bolt handle that comes with issue Mosin Nagants of whatever flavor.

I've seen the actual mounts from the builder, although I don't have one. Darrell is a good guy and has an engineering background. I know it to be a solid production and would buy one myself if I wanted one.

Here is a link to a major milsurp site that tells about it.

Well... link won't work. Ezboard problem with linking to a particular forum.

Try www.milsurpshooter.net Go down to Darrels mount forum for information.....if you can. Otherwise email me and I'll give you his email.

The cheap mount is aluminum and has crappy screws. I have one on one of my Mosins right now that has a broken screw and will need to be drilled out.

The ATI mount requires cutting the bolt. People have had trouble with the screw snapping. IMNSHO, it looks like crap.

Do a search for Darrell's mount. His is kinda like the cheap one, but well made and works well.

Ditto Darrell's. I've owned several of his mounts and they're far better than the B-Square and other knockoffs.

The other option would be to pick up an ex-sniper or faux sniper with the holes drilled for a PU and set up a PU style side mount. Or you can get the real thing if you have the $$, but remember almost all PU's are fakes.

I saw a guy at the gun range last week with one of the cheap scope mounts and a red dot scope.

After about 3 shots, his mount broke loose. Then he tightened it. Then it broke loose again. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

I have a little experience with the ATI mount.

The scope mount is pretty good as long as it's mounted well. If The holes are drilled and tapped properly and the screws are Locktited into place things will work ok. The mount is machined from a solid piece of aluminum and has a few sharp edges - especially where you have to load cartridges into it. Scraped knuckles can be avoided with a bit of judicious filing followed by some Alumahyde paint.
The bolt-handle is another matter though. Steve Wagner has a better solution to that problem and you can do it yourself. Just don't try to do it too quickly... think about what you're going to do before you try to do it.

Having researched what it takes to put a Kochetov mount onto a Mosin, I would recommend staying away from that road unless you have a machine shop or have a friend who does. The holes do not always line up, the base must be aligned quite precisely, and this is not something you can do with a hand drill and visegrips. At least not properly. And then there is the matter of the proper scope. Not all PU-shaped scopes are actually PU. Some are machine gun sights and some are even parts of artillery aiming devices, which means the adjustments would be totally wrong. Other scopes will not fit the Kochetov rings.
