Good for what?

You plan to use it mostly for ____________________?

That will help you get a useful answer perhaps.

Savage 10 FP, Is a Tactical Bolt Action Heavy Barrel Needs a BiPod or a bench to shoot from though
Field Use The same make but an 11 G
Stepping up Would be the Weatherby Vangaurd, and or the Howa 1500 (Same Rifle)
Next would be the CZ 550 and then I'm not sure.
I can't recommend a semi auto 308 as I don't know a lot of specifics about them.

As far as brands go...I think my next rifle will be a Howa 1500 Lightening. It would be helpful to know what you plan to use this rifle for. Do you want a bolt action, semi auto, single shot? Are you going to be hunting, plinking, or target shooting. There are an awful lot of great rifles out there chambered in .308.

DSA FAL

Bro you might wanna read through the archives a bit, most of the info you have been seeking has been gone over...and over....and over....and over.

Better to do a little reading then ask specific questions rather than these sweeping issues like 9mm vs 308.

Good Luck

I have a Ruger M77 MarkII in .308. I don't much care for it, to be honest.

My next .308 rifle will be this:

http://www.aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Enf-2A__Enfield_2A_.308_NATO_7.62x51_Rifles.html

At only $169.95, it's a steal.

Miamitiger,
Since you are so new to all of this you might want to slow down a little and really get a feel for different rifles and what rifle is good for the purpose you are thinking of using it for.

I know you are really anxious to get something to shoot RIGHT NOW but if you spend a lot of money and then realize it's not what you need or want you are going to be very upset.

The Enfield listed above is a good idea for a "fun gun" or even a Mosin Nagant for between $80 & $95 would be a good idea. You can get ammo for $3.00 a box and have a lot of fun while you research what your hunting needs will be. Take a look at this site and see if it might be for you! http://www.russian-mosin-nagant.com/russian_section.htm

Myself, for a .308 I'd get either a Ruger M77 Mk2 or Savage Model 11G (GL in my case) as I have the latter in .243Winchester and like it quite well.

Not cheap but an M134 would be nice. Rough on critters.

for a great sporter/hunting/ humping in the woods rifle, find an old remmy mohawk 600. fantastic.
also a good sporter is a howa.
another great all around rifle is the savage, in both sporter configs, and bench/sniper configs. very , very , good for the money.

The Remington 700 is what most SWAT snipers use and unless you want to move up to the M24 thats about the best gun you can get for a reasonable amount of money. My 0.02

Bolt guns:

Savage 10FP - Cheapest option (best IMHO)
Remington 700 - More expensive not as many good features (needs work)
Winchester 70 - Cheaper than Remington 700 not as many features as 10FP

When I was looking at bolt guns, The only difference between the 700 PSS and the win 70 tactical was the PSS had 1 extra sling stud (for mounting the bipod).

I went with the savage 10FP and spent the money I saved on better optics.

Semi-auto:

FAL - The right arm of the free world. These things are awesome rifles, They are relatively inexpensive, but other than DSA you are going to end up with a used gun. The DSA guns are pretty pricy, and for the cost I would go with an M1A.

M1A - These are great guns, they are offered in everything from a match grade package to an entry gun.

Figure out what you want, then maybe ask a better question, otherwise the only answer you get will be 42 ;)

I have one more Garand to build and I am seriously thinking of making it a .308Garand.

If it is a semi-auto you want and money is not an option for you, I would get a high end M1A myself.

I vote for either the CZ 550 or the Tikka T3.

I'd go with a Savage CZ, or Tikka bolt gun with a good quality fixed 4X scope. About as close to practicality as you can get...Essex
