Just bought a new SG it's the Mossy 500A "persuader" model
anyhow I have bought some things to add on and I would like to learn more about what I can do to change configurations.
Right now it's set up for HD... but later I may want to hunt some with it.
Do you guys have some good links for accessories? mostly HD stuff
thx

First, buy lots of ammo, use up and repeat. The best accessory in the world will not substitute for expertise.Lose the PG and install a real stock tho.
Once you're a few K rounds through that shotgun
(BTW, good choice) then consider bellsnwhistles.

Mr. T :D is there anything you're looking for in particular?
When I get home, I have a few links to some websites that sell accessories for the mossy and other shotguns. I'll either post here or send you a PM then.

you'll want to replace the plastic safety with a mettal one fom brownells.
that's the only thing a mossberg needs from the factory.

Lots of threads here and even more in the TFL archives about this... If you research them you might avoid wasting money on stuff that looks good but isn't.
Other than what Andrew said about the plastic safety replacement (which has never been a problem for me) the accessory most folks agree with is the Sidesaddle for onboard ammo storage and fast reloads. On the Mossberg you can use the full 6 shell version.
Also read the threads about the wisdom of a shotgun-mounted light in the HD situation. You might want to add a good gun-mounted light.
Most other stuff is for show, not go.

i'd advise against using a sidesaddle on guns with aluminum recievers, because repeated firing of the gun with ammunition on it WILL wallow out the holes, making your gun useless.

Darrin - no I guess there isn't anything specific
Guys so far I have the side saddle - flashlight holder
I put on a Butler Creek folding stock which made the gun not function popularly so that's gone... and I got a "tactical sling," which did not seem tactical to me... it's gone.... oh I do want to buy a leather sling though.
Dave M. - Yeah I'm a tyro at SG's... I've shot them growing up but never had my own. But I bought about over $100 in SG ammo. got a case of 00 Wolf for $70 and other stuff. Today I took the SG out after work to my nutria hunting spot and there was a dead sheep with turkey vultures all around. Well I shot before I got to the pond so when I got their the nutria were gone. Then I shot up the dead sheep just to see what damage it would do.
Later I tried a few slugs, it seems the POI is just above the bead.
humm I got a plastic safety... I hope that's easy to replace by myself. The bit about the side saddle sounds upsetting... anyone want to confirm this... I like to keep this accessory

Here's some things I've been looking at:
A Heat Shield (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd/product.asp?dept%5Fid=1226&sku=46332&imgid=&mscssid=HSSDTE7249TR8G0LDHAWU5SAL1MP9KE8) will be ordered soon.
Not sure if I'll get this sling (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd/product.asp?dept%5Fid=1226&sku=SHT%2D015&imgid=&mscssid=HSSDTE7249TR8G0LDHAWU5SAL1MP9KE8) or not, but I am getting a sling (http://www.always-armed.com/shop/index.php?shop=1&cart=66384&cat=43&keywords=&match_criteria=&rec=10) of some sort.
Oh, and I'm looking at this stock (http://www.combatstocks.com/itemDetail.cfm?id=3) instead of the top-folding stock I was looking at. Maybe in a few months I'll pick up a used mossy 500 and throw a folding stock (http://www.combatstocks.com/itemDetail.cfm?id=2) on it just for fun. :D

Good! BA/UU/R will get you proficient in short order.
BTW, vultures serve a legitimate purpose and taste awful, I hear. Nutes are eco-interlopers without legitimacy and cook up like Marmota, IOW excellent fare.

Not to worry, the vultures stayed alive... barely :D . The funny thing about nutria is that after I keep killin them they always seem to come back.
After studying I'm figuring out what I want vs. what is gimmic...or doesn't work for me. I read all the links (thx Sisco and Darrin)
If anyone is still interested I need some type of shotshell holder. Not on my gun or on a sling but some other system.
A sling would normally attach to the end of my shell tube, right near the muzzle and that irritates me. It even looks like my sling swivels could swing up and blast my sling (when I get one) :uhoh: I want to mount the sling out of the way... as I've seen a pic of.
and perhaps a ghost ring sight (sometime)... if I get a ghost ring does that mean that I new to replace the front bead with a reg. sight as well?

If you have installed a "standard" stock and forend [No 'pistol grips' for me, thanks] on your Mossberg, you can always find barrels and choke tubes at any of the major supply places like Brownell's, Gander Mountain, etc to make your shotty into more of a "field & game/bird hunter" configuration.
And {Gasp!} you can buy barrels and such direct from Mossberg.

GRs need a matching front sight, mrt.
I like and use the Nam era shell pouches. They slip on a belt and hold 12. The ammo belts hold more, the neoprene ones for waterfowlers are around $20 and work well.
Try braining those nutes with a 22 Mag, cook like woodchuck.

I got the optional 28" barrel. I know can use it better for trap.

Andrew, you mentioned...i'd advise against using a sidesaddle on guns with aluminum recievers, because repeated firing of the gun with ammunition on it WILL wallow out the holes, making your gun useless. You've noted this before on TFL, but I've never seen any data... I've put several thousand slugs, buckshots, and other heavy loads downrange and have yet to notice any enlargement of the receiver holes. Can you tell me about when this kicks in so I can avoid ruining my aluminum receiver? Thanks.

It'll take awhile. i've personally handled a couple defenders that wore sidesaddles and had the holes wallowed out, it took 10,000 rounds or so.
the holes on the side of the reciever towards the sidesaddle were worse.
youcan get around this by not shooting your shotgun with ounds on the sidesaddle unless necessary.

I like it... though I think I'll take it off again to put on some med strength loc tite on the screws... just a smidge.
Foghorn - yeah from day one I was at Mossy's site. Their is a lot of aftermarket accessories that are top notch which I learn about and have to find somewhere else. Not so much interest in barrels right now.
still looking for a good leather sling, nothing fancy though which will attach in manner where it won't ever get blown off.
Like I tried to explain earilier as a stock gun they gave me a swivel stud to screw on the front of the magazine cap... so my sling swivels would attach there and my magazine tube and barrel extend to the same length... so if my sling swiveled up it would be a bad day.

jeepdriver,
What are using for sights on that? I see what looks like a rail on the rear, where did you get that and have you tried using a redot on it?

JeepDriver...
Looks just about like mine.
How do you do fast loading from the sidesaddle with the brass up? Only way I can get any speed is with brass down... pull shell down with support hand and load from underneath.
Andrew Wyatt

The late Michael Harries used to carry buckshot brass down and slugs brass up on the sidesaddle on his benelli M1, the theory being that brass up is easy to drop in the ejection port, and brass down is easy to put in the magazine.

I threw them in there for the pic. Don't know why I put them in that way this time. Usually I load them with the brass down.

No rail on it I think you're seeing the top of the side saddle. I don't have sights on it yet. I want to put a set of ghost ring sights on it some day. The shot gun took a back seat for a while so I could buy some more pistols.

Try that page. They have tacstar accessories, and some other tactical goodies. If you want a folding stock, though, get a Cop Stock (http://www.knoxx.com/product/COPstock.html). Folding stocks increase recoil, but this one helps it. (this statement has not been personally evaluated by me)

More than just a few years back, I purchased a Mossberg 500C 20ga. This came with the 18.5 inch barrel and PG. Not long after that, I ordered a stock, that PG is just not realistic. When the next squirrel season was looming, I sent off to Cabela's for a 26" vent rib barrel, with choke tubes.
Now I know the 20Ga doees not stack up with the 12 for many things, but I have always enjoyed this little Mossy, and have carried it as a truck gun, or used it as a bedside shottie many time.
The versitility is there, to do a variety of things, with the right accessories. I am looking at a rifled barrel, and scope, for deer hunting in heavy cover, as the next accessory aquisition.

I picked up another Mossberg 500 today (this makes #3). The gunsmith at the the store where I bought it (Gun City here in Nashville) had done some really nice looking work to it. He parkerized the bolt and slide bars, then painted and baked the reciever, mag tube, and barrel in a tannish color. It looks really sweet. When I bought it, I actually thought to myself "I wish I had a digital camera so I could post pics on THR.". Does that make me a THR junkie?
Next thing I'm thinking about doing is contacting Bob Lumpkin from www.nouglyguns.com, and asking if he can do the foreend and stock in 3-color desert camo. The color of the reciever very nearly matches the tan color of my DCU's, so I think it'll look great. (Yes, for you shotgun purists out there, I WILL be leaving the stock on it, no PG for this gun.) I may also get him to paint a sidesaddle for me, but that'll come later on.
Frank
P.S. Eventually, I will get hold a digital camera and get pics posted when the gun is finished.
