Brand snob
–noun 1. a person who imitates, cultivates, or slavishly admires one gun maker's brand and is condescending or overbearing to anyone else's other gun brand selections.

Come on now, you know who you are! :uhoh:

When someone posts that Brand X (the brand you worship) may have some shortcomings, you flip-out! :cuss: You can't type and post a defense of Brand X fast enough.

How dare someone report a failure-to-feed about Brand X! It MUST be operator error or they MUST be using cheap ammo or limp-wristing! Did they do a proper break-in of 5000 rds and clean and lube the gun every 50 rds with Brand X Super-Lube only!?

Someone reports that Brand X customer sevice is slow to respond. HERETIC you say! They must be burned at the stake for such statements. THEY must have called when the service dept was all down with the bubonic plague that is going around at Brand X headquarters. You must be PATIENT with Brand X! :banghead:

You know who you are, you Brand snobs...............:neener:

Start the New Year right. Right here and now. Confess and be cleansed of you fanatic devotion to Brand X.

We will ALL forgive you, our fellow THR friend. ;) :D

OK...You got me. :o

Im NailGun, and....I'm a brand snob....

I believe that only guns starting with "M" are worthy of my unwavering favoritism. I snobbishly defend the "M" guns with arrogance and condescending overbearingness. What are these "M" guns you ask?

M91/30, M28, M39, M44, M1911, M2, M1969, *.Mauser, M-p5, MARLIN, Makarov, M16.*, M1, M14.....and the list goes on and on.

WHell...I guess that the "R" guns do sort of...have some sort of ...purpose for their existence.... Made for heretics, i guess. Personally I would rather be burned at the stake. :fire:

There...I feel much better. NailGun. :D

This rant...brought to you by the letter "M"...

For some reason, I find myself thinkng about looking for a Hi-Point at the next gun show. But it'll be like buying porn - have to shell out for a 'real gun' at the same time so I don't look like a creep.

I like to try different makes and designs, mostly for self-defense. I own a (no!) Cobra Patriot .45 that shoots well as long as you use 230gr ammo, a (oh no!) Charter 2000 Undercover that goes bang everytime and is a nice CC gun, and a Taurus PT145 that is my favorite CC .45. But I also have a couple of Colt and S&W revolvers than I'm saving as investments.

Let's hear it for choice.

I currently own the following brands:

Browning
Beretta
Remington
Bushmaster
Rock River Arms
CZ
Springfield Armory
Smith & Wesson
Kahr

I have owned and sold the following brands:

Browning
Beretta
Remington
Sig
Ruger

I buy guns based on proven reliability, not brand name.

I don't think I am a brand snob........but..............there are a few brands I just don't understand.

I have never seen the "value" or "appeal" of Ruger or Taurus guns.

In my eyes most Ruger guns look like lower cost options to better brands.

I have never seen the "value" or "appeal" of Ruger or Taurus guns.

I agree about the Taurus's. But, IMHO, Ruger revolvers are every bit the equal of S&W revolvers in regards to quality and reliability. S&W does have an edge on looks -- Rugers tend to be a bit fugly.

I'll buy most anything and judge it on how it works.
For instance I like Kimbers because they are the best I've found.

There are some brands that I won't buy because of my experience with the guns or the company. For instance Glock, Colt, S&W (locks), Llima, EAA and a few more.

Better add Skyy to that list. I just bought one to try it out and it pretty much self destructed within 180 rounds.

No brand snob, but when it comes to revolvers nothing beats a Colt or Smith. But, I do have Rugers and I am lusting after a certain Taurus. My expectations just aren't as high for anything other than Colt or Smith.

Autos? Never liked the rattle trap 1911's. Kimber makes a far better product other than perhaps the old Colt Gold Cups. Love my Ruger Mark II. Love my High Standard Victor. Any I like my Glocks just fine.

Not a brand snob, but I do get excited when I keep repeatedly reading about how reliably unreliable 1911s are. I've only owned 4 over the years, so the sample size is small, but I've never had a peck of trouble from my unmodified, unbroke-in, moderately priced, mass produced, shoot any kind of bullet profile 1911s.

Not so much a brand snob as a quality snob. I have been collecting for 30 years. Over that time I have learned that for the most part my dollars are better spent on brands like S&W, Colt, Ruger, Kimber,Remington, Winchester,Walther, CZ, Browning,FN ,Beretta, etc...I can go on and on. These are good companies that generally make a good product.

I have also learned that guns made by certain makers are to be avoided. For instance anything by RG and assembled in Hialeah Florida are junk in my view. I learned that at the tender age of 15 with a RG 23 Revolver that was chambered in .22lr. It would fire reliably in single action but not double action. Sight regulation was poor...as was quality. There are a number of companies out there I think make a crappy products but the market eventually takes care of that. One of the reasons RG is gone. ;)

Among some of the old-school LEOs that I basically grew up with, there were only three brands of handguns: Smith and Wesson, Colt, and "Offbrand."
That doesn't apply to me, though. Other brands that have earned my respect include: CZ, Glock, HK (although overpriced), Sig, Beretta, Ruger, Springfield, and Star. Brands other than these I would call "Offbrands."

So, yeah, I'm a bit of a snob I suppose.

That why I have the following:

2 Rugers
6 Smith & Wessons
1 Springfield Armory

I'm with 420 stainless.

It seems there is a movement underway to convince anyone who spends less than $1000 on a 1911 that it can't be depended upon to save your life.

I've bought several guns over the years I regretted, and no one could talk me out of getting them at the time. The only guns I will disparaige are guns that have failed me, and when I DO mention it, I hope anyone who sees it will realize that my experience is just that: my experience.

Let people shoot, drive, listen to, worship, romance, etc WHATEVER THEY WANT TO.

There's more'n Smith and Wesson and 1911 out there. If I sometimes fire at S&W, it's only because so many Smith snobs fire at Ruger, Taurus, and Rossi, all brands I have or do own along with a Smith and have had really good experiences with. I had 2 1911s I never warmed to because they gave me so much angst when I first got 'em. I had to spend money to make 'em work when I felt they should work out of the box and when they finally worked, they only worked with a limited number of loads and nothing with a hole in the front. Finally, I decided Jeff Cooper and all other highly opinionated gun writers were full of caca and went my own way. That turned me off to 1911s and I swore off 'em. Now, it don't help that there are so many Cooper disciple 1911 snobs that think if you carry anything else, you are going to die and must have a death wish because only a 1911 will kill a man in a gun fight. I've out shot a lot of lesser marksmen with my Ruger P90 that were 1911 snobs and they never seem to get the point. I think it's more the man behind the gun than the platform. Spending all your time worrying about hardware and never developing the software seems sort of stupid, trying not to be any kind of snob here.

Anyway, I've never understood the "fits my hand" argument. If you don't like the fit, ADAPT, or maybe BUY A DIFFERENT GRIP. I can adapt to about anything, even broom handle Mausers. It is not good to be so picky about a gun that you can't hit with anything, but that kind of gun (which is a suspicious claim anyway). What if you have to pick up another gun off a dead guy to finish a fight or something? What if in a SHTF situation, a friend gives you a gun and you can't grasp it because it "doesn't fit your hand" and falls in the mud because you can't figure out how to hold it.... When I see "it doesn't fit my hand", I hear brand snob bells and alarms going off. That's the most common gripe against Glocks. JUST SAY IT, I'M A SNOB AND I THINK ALL GUNS SHOULD BE BLUED STEEL CAUSE GOD ORIGINALLY MADE THE FIRST ONE THAT WAY!!!! I mean, you could also add that God is JMB, but hey, don't wanna be sacrilegious.

Another gun snob argument is "can't stand the trigger" when made about a DA revolver or DAO auto. There's gun snob alarms going off....ring, ring, ring, 1911 snob....alert, alert!!!!! DA requires you apply yourself to LEARN the technique. It's a little tougher than learning a 2 lb single action trigger, also a lot safer to actually carry. If you don't study, you won't pass the test and you'll flunk out and be a loser. Apply yourself and you can learn anything, even DA revolver shooting.

I've always had a pretty limited budget. Buying a $1000 gun isn't in the cards. I like a gun that works, quality for less money, high value. When I find such a gun, I feel fullfilled. I appreciate high end guns, especially shotguns, but I know the lower priced stuff can work just as well. I kill ducks just as dead using my $300 Mossberg as my buddy does with his Benelli, more actually cause he ain't that good a wing shot. :D What I REALLY don't understand is a guy that carries a 42 ounce 1911 all day IWB and says he "enjoys" it or at least that it doesn't bother him. In reality, he doesn't think any other style of gun is worthy, he is a gun snob. Carrying an effective firearm doesn't have to hurt.

Ah, thank you for letting me vent......:D :D :D :D :D

I'm a bit suspicious of brands that have a reputation for low quality and unreliability. However, I do check them out.

Fun2Shoot,
I've also noticed the flip side of your gun snob behavior. Along with unthinking loyalty to a certain brand, many folks also have a knee-jerk dislike of certain manufacturers. In reading these forums, I've noticed quite a bit of condemnation of certain brands, only some justified. Some political - folks still hate Ruger for Bill Ruger's statements, and S&W for selling out to Bill Clinton. Aren't those situations over with? Sometimes people denounce all guns made by X as junk because they once owned one out of tens or hundreds of thousands made, and it had problems. If y'all can make predictions based on that small a sample you should be predicting election results and doing opinion polls. Some individuals have never owned or fired a firearm made by the company they trash, and they're still convinced the guns are junk. :scrutiny:

For examples of all of this, try 'Worst Gun Maker?' on the General Gun Discussions board.

Folks need to lighten up, I think.

S&W does have an edge on looks -- Rugers tend to be a bit fugly.I disagree, especially when it comes to Model 29 compared to Redhawk. The reason I bought my Redhawk all those years ago was because it was the most beautiful .44 magnum in the world at the time. I still think so, though the Colt Anaconda deserves a second look.

But even though I have 10 or more brands, I have to confess a bit of a bias toward Colt. Guess I'll always have a soft spot for them. And as was said, I am more of a platform bigot. 1911s. How do you improve on perfection?

All of my Rugers and NAA's handguns will still be shooting when my HK's, Colts, S&W's, Charters & Walthers have long since petered out! :) In my mind Rugers & NAA are premium brands built to last several lifetimes and then some. They may not ride like a Cadillac but they will outlast a Tank, are accurate and extremely reliable! I do not consider looks when purchasing a handgun as beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Heck, I might even purchase a Glock in the future if Gaston would see fit to do someting about those unsupported chambers! :D

Maybe I'm a bit of a Colt snob but I own firearms made all over the place, heck, one of my fave pistols to shoot is from the former eastern bloc.

Colt made the finest arms in America pre WW2, IMHO, and up through the 70's they didn't have much competition (the only 'off brand 1911A1's available would have been GI surplus) and they really took pride in craftsmanship.

I think the same could be said for S&W in the same time frame. Beleive it or not, I own no Smith and Wesssons. Not a single Glock, nor an HK, nor a CZ, or a Sig... this doesn't mean I don't respect the other brands, just never had the right reason to buy one.

Put it another way. One day I decided I wanted a hi-cap 9mm. I went to a range witha buddy and his wife and we shot every 9mm we could get our hands on. We both liked the Browning, she liked the Sig. Heck, I liked the Sig. But at the time a new Sig was over $600, and I didn't have that kind of coin. I ended up buying a BHP clone, and doing a lot of practice.

I don't really need a reason to buy anything, but sometimes my reasons are more complicated.

I just cannot get past the LOOKS of the Super Redhawk... awful. It's like the kind of wretched looking thing that you have in a nightmare featuring crocodiles and zombies. And I am a HUGE Ruger fan! sigh... :p

And to answer the question, since Colt makes my favorite revolver (SAA) and my favorite autoloader (1911) I s'poze I'm a bit of a Colt snob. :)

I'm not so much a brand snob as I am a model snob. For example, I always tout Browning O/Us as favorites of mine, but strongly caution folks against Browning auto and pump shotguns.

Colts are legendary historically, but over-priced mediocrity IMO. I have a hard time with people telling me that Colt products are still the best.

I am a hard core fan of the Remington 870 Wingmaster & Marlin lever guns. I also love Remington 700 rifles and Benelli shotguns. The Ruger 10/22 and single action revolvers are also favorites. S&W wheel guns are better finished with nicer triggers than the Rugers, but too fragile for my tastes.

I don't like Glocks or the XD simply because I think they are ugly. :neener: They are good guns, but why would you want one when you can have another fun that works as well and is pretty to look at.

I don't think being a "gun snob" (or any other kind of snob really) has anything to do with what YOU buy/own personally. I you want own nothing but Colts for example, that's your choice. I don't know if this makes any sense, but at the stage of life that I'm in, I want the best.

For my collection, this means that I'm going to match up a particular caliber with "the best" brand/platform and I'm not going have "two of anything" either brand or caliber.

For example - my 9mm is a Browning Hi-power, because for 9mm, I've decided that the Browning Hi-power is the best platform for that. I have a Springfield Armory 1911 in .45 ACP, etc.

From that standpoint, I consider my collection to be very solid and it would bother me to have duplicates of any caliber/brand.

Now as far as shotguns are concerned, it's going to be a Browning or nothing.

I'm hetero - I like Colt (long arms and autos) and S&W (revos). :D

I have a similar rule that prevents me from buying .357s made of scandium, titanium, or unobtainium -- I NEVER buy any handgun that weighs less that the bullet it fires.

Words to live by....:D

Even more salient, in my mind, would be: I NEVER buy any handgun that costs less than a box of ammunition it fires. :neener:

I have absolutely no brand loyalty to anything, not even the car or motorcycle I drive. As soon as someone comes out with something better, I switch. Same with guns. I'll avoid a known bad gun simply because it's a bad gun. Sometimes bad guns come from well known makers and carry a high price tag, sometimes they come from junk makers and are dirt cheap. Not all cheap guns are junk. Bersa comes to mind as making quite good guns for low prices.

That's a pretty good philosophy, Plink, but the analogy is a little flawed.

Other than the new materials, gun technology is almost 100 years old. There have been very few striking improvements in guns like there have in cars, even though they are old. You can't compare a 40 year old car to a 40 year old gun. The gun is still relevant while the car is an antique curiousity that will not perform as well as a current model.

I like cheap stuff too, but the only handguns I like are usually quite old.

It wasn't really intended as an analogy, but was more of a statement of my mindset. I don't "only ride Harley" or "only drive Ford" or whatever. I'm the same way with guns. I have many favorite models, but no favorite makers. Thus I'm hardly a brand snob.

I agree 100% about guns still being relevent. Other than being a fanatical traditional black powder shooter, some of my favorite designs are the 1911 pattern pistols and the Mauser bolt actions. One thing I have found is that while newer may be better in automotive technology, it's not always true with guns. The new crop of overhyped techno guns hitting the market recently are no better than the sound, solid designs that have been around for decades and in many cases are worse.

Kinda......

With revolvers I prefer rugers over smiths or colts. For two reasons:

1. Rugers are known to handle heavy/hot handloads. These are the type of loads I generally run.
2. The cylinder latch on a ruger D/A is much easier to manipulate left handed. (At least for this southpaw)

But I don't hack on others choices. Thier money, thier gun, not my choice or business.

Man, I'm glad you guys like all those other brands. Keep gun prices down, you know.
And to a Rampant Pony guy, those other guns are "other" brands.
I like 'em all, but the first gun I bought was a Colt, and the most recent one I bought was a Colt, and the next one I'm buying is a Colt.
Guess that's a rut.

(Oh, come on, now, I'm just being obstreperous. Ease up.)
