These last several years out in Central/Eastern Oregon, Jack Rabbits have been on a low ebb of their population cycle. There was a time that I never had a hunting session out there where I didn't see at least 20 of the silly things. But recent years...I've seen NONE AT ALL .
My last varmint trip out - near Burns - I was brushing my teeth while walking around camp, thu the various sage type underbrush. Much to my surprise, a Jackrabbit jumped up and hopped into camp. As I was 20 yards from a rifle; I pumped a few Remington Vipers thru him from my trusty Mark II.
Next day I spotted 2 sets of J. Rabbit ears bobbing thu the Sage brush.
Looks like Jack is coming back!

Dunno is it true, but I've heard that jackrabbits are like sunspots: They cycle on an eleven-year go-'round.
Back in 1981, there was an explosion in the jackrabbit population in SW Idaho and northern Nevada. Time ragazine reported on a deal in Idaho where farmers would build very long vee-fences of chicken wire, and several hundred people would drive the rabbits into the vee and club them.
I visited a buddy up in Winnemucca, and we went out one morning and without moving from one place shot jackrabbits until we were somewhere between bored and just sick of shooting. I dunno; well over 100. Came back a week later, and we apparently hadn't even made a dent in the population...
Just a bunch of coyotes sittin' around, burpin' and pickin' their teeth, saying, "Where y'all been? It's lunch time!"

I don't know about other places, but jackrabbits are not eaten around here, since they have a skin disease which humans can get.
whenever i shoot one, i leave it where it lies.
