$800 really??? Boy did I get a deal back in September :D
A member of my Guard unit who is a police officer in another town near here called me and told me about an elderly gentleman where he worked who had two SW snubbies, one in stainless and one in blue. He only wanted to sell these small concealable handguns to a police officer (must have read too much AARP literature) He wanted $410 for the pair. My buddy said he'd like to go for the deal himself, but as he'd just bought a house, he was a little strapped for cash. I told him I'd buy them, and then sell him the stainless one when he got back on his feet after the home purchase. I called the gentleman who had the snubbies, and he said he still had them and invited me down to look at them. I went by the bank and withdrew $420 and headed for the man's home.
I was invited in, and escorted down to the gun room, where I was treated to a glass of iced tea and the .50 cent tour of the gentleman's collection. He was 78, turned out he had been a highpower competitor years ago. Quite an accomplished one too it all of the trophies and medals were any indication. After we talked shooting for awhile (he was getting back into competition after a 15 year absence, but didn't think his shoulder (several surgerys) could handle his M1 any longer. We discussed the AR15, which I have a little experience with and I offered to loan him one of mine to try out.
The opened a cabinet and retrieved the guns I had come to buy. The one that I was told was stainless, was actually electroless nickle with a nice satin finish. He had no paper or box with it, In fact he had it in an oily sock.
Then he handed me a blue box. The corners are reinforced with blue metal clips reinforcing the corners. On one end, in silver letters it said:
SMITH & WESSON
.38 CHIEFS SPECIAL
BLUE FINISH MODEL 36
2 INCH BARREL SQUARE BUTT
I opened the box and inside, wrapped in brown impregnated paper, with blue revolvers, the SW logo and the words The Wolrds Finest Handguns printed on it was a brand new unfired model 36. The cleaning rod was present as is the brush. The instruction sheet, the original warranty card and a receipt from the auction where my new friend had bought it for $240 more years ago then he could remember.
I told him that these guns were worth much more then what he was asking for them and asked if he wanted to reconsider the price.
"$410 is what I quoted you on the phone, and $410 it is." he answered.
I counted out the $420 in 20s I had brought with me and told him not to worry about the other $10.
"No, I said $10 and I won't take a dollar more, let me get the wifes purse and I'll get you your change."
We completed the deal and I left. Like the one you were given all the dates are 15 April 1955. I am thinking that this is probably the date the instructions. warranty card and box were printed.
So $800..now I do feel guilty. I guessed it would be worth between $400 and 500.

i know, he offered to pay her or trade some oil changes for it, but she wouldn't hear of it. She's about 70ish and really doesn't like guns anyway. she wqas given this one years ago, and the place she lives now (high rise for old folks in Buckhead) won't let them have guns there anyway, sooooooooo :)
oh the grip on it is wooden , but it has a metal addtion with finger grooves. The engraving on the metal part of the grips says "Tyler's Grips - Oklahoma City and has a 4 digit #.
Also came with a real nice leather holster and half box of ammo.
This old lady teases me every time I see her about My Hubby being her boyfriend. I told her today that if she had any more presents like this, she could have him full time
    :D :D :D
oh and on the outside of the box it says 3 inch Brl, but it's only 2 inch

Nice job. I would love to meet this woman. She might live with my grandmother or aunt. They both live in high rises in Buckhead, but these are $2.25M apartments (Park Place).

I occasionally carry one of these guns. It was my grandfather's primary home defense weapon. It is a good gun.

That`s a Tyler T grip. Very common years ago as it improves your grip without adding to the width of the gun. I called Tyler about getting one for my Colt DS and a spare for my Model 10. No good.:banghead:
Back in the early `70s, I bought a Model 36 2" brand new from the dep`t for $65. I would imagine back in the 50`s they went for about $25-30.:what:

Uhhhhh. . . . I won a raffle for a shotgun once.
It's amazing what kind of deals you can "fall into" by being nice to everybody, isn't it?

Give us the first few of the S/N and we can tell you its birthday.
Nice score, BTW!
If it's a square-butt with adjustable sights and is marked Model 36, then it's a Chief's Special Target Model and (in the described condition) may well be worth eight bills.

Neat!
I keep one of those here at work in a drawer. It was made in the 70's though.
