I had a 28 gauge H&R single shot that I learned on, it was a good gun but did break once, only after a few hundred to 1000 rounds. My dad got it fixed but when I got older I went to an 870 and never looked back. I have never seen a H&R pump, but from my experience the h&r's aren't the most reliable shotguns. The 870 however is the definition of reliability. You should spend the extra cash on the Remington870 or, if you only want to spend $199 get a Mossberg, a good gun and a great price. Here's my Remington 870, I think it is an early 1950's model and still works great, the slide is buttery smooth, lightning quick and really tightly assembled. Meaning it doesn't rattle around like those Mossys which is nice for stalking game.

Got this bad boy for $180, figured for that price this thing was worth it as an antique/collectable. Turns out to be my favorite 870 yet. It has a modified choke and only handles 2 3/4" shells but it puts out a great pattern, fits great and has the best feeling slide ever. Not only that but it is 100% metal, no plastic trigger guard here. On its first hunt with me I landed 6 quail, 1 rabbit, 1 duck and 1 goose. Not bad for a new gun, well new to me. Get an 870, any 870 and you wont regret it. The H&R might not be the same unbelievable quality.

The singles are made in the US and well thought of. Lots of gun for the money.
Durable, reliable, inexpensive.
The pumps are made in China.
870s are neither scarce nor costly. They have an unmatched track record of generations of service. Get an 870.....

I have a nef pardner 12 gauge and i like it. when i was a kid i had a 410. I got the 12 because it reminded me of that, it looks the some just bigger. Its nothing fancy and just a single shot but it works good.

The single shots are great, American made guns for cheap.
The pumps are Chinese copies of the 870, but are appear to be well built. Honestly, I would consider one over an Express nowadays as the H&R feels just as well built or better... :uhoh:
Of course, the 870 has been around for so long that there are millions available in the used market and H&R doesn't offer a stainless, or parkerized version like the Remington.
If I were looking for a cheap pump I'd strongly consider the H&R. If I wanted a more expensive pump I'd step up to a nicer 870 model or more likely a Browning BPS (because I really want one in 10 gauge). I like the Benellis as well, but I don't need a 3.5" chamber 12 gauge...

I've seen the Chinese-made pump Pardner shotguns and they seem OK, but I agree with Dave. The Remington 870 Express is a proven gun that really isn't all that more expensive. I'd get the 870.
