**Official: How much do you spend on Ammo Thread**

It's not really official, but im sure everyone has a chance to chime in on this subject.
How much do you spend on ammo per year? (approximate guess of course)
Do you feel that at times this might be too much or you could have used the money to save up for other nessecities?
So far, with my limited funds and practice I have only managed to purchase 200 rounds of 9mm, 200 rounds of .45, 100 rounds of .380 Auto and 1000 rounds of .22 LR.
I've spent a measily $125 on ammo so far since I turned 18 in April. Definately not enough for practice in any other caliber except .22
The way things are looking, I believe im only going to be able to afford .22 for 2007 :( :o :( :o .
-Elmer
EDIT: Waywatcher, I didn't even think about the ammo i have in stock. With that being said, i only have enough ammo to fill up my mags. 20rds of 9mm and 14rds of .45. I shot the rest.
I'm dangerously low. But then again, thats enough for 34 BG's:neener: .

That's a tough guess, but I'd wager 500-800.
I feel my ammo stores are a bit low.

My calculator, that is.
WWB .45acp is about $20, 1 box a week means $1040 a year.
WWB .223 is about $7, 2 boxes a week means $730 or so
Win Super X .22LR is about a dollar a box, I shoot probably two boxes a week. That's $104 a year.
My .308 reloads cost about .40 cents a round, 50 a week. That's another $1040. Yikes! 1040 x 2 = 2080 + 730 = 2810 + 104 = 2914.
Shees, that's about $60 a week. About right, I suppose.
Man, I could scale back my handgunning by one week a month, buy a .22LR bolt and carrier for my AR and cut back on .308, do more longer range stuff with the .22 for trigger control and save a lot of money. No wonder I haven't eaten in four days!

Well, I'm a real lightweight in this department so...
1,200 rds 7.62 @ $185.00
2,000 rds .22LR @ $25.00 (whee, that one is fun to say)
1,000 rds "Cowboy" .38 special @ $185
300 rds .38 special @ $85
600 rds .357 magnum @ $185
300 rds 12 ga "Featherlights" @ $85 (that was a nice sale)
1,000 rds .40 S&W practice @ $200
250 rds Premium .40 S&W SD @ $120
Total, $1,070.00 And that will pretty much cover me for the year (or longer on stuff I don't shoot much like the SKS).
Well I guess that wasn't too bad.

I've spent around 2-3 thousand per year up to this point.
But the wife just quit working yesterday(mutual decision), that kills around a grand a month in spending money.:( But she'll be able to get a lot of stuff crossed off her *to do* list this year now. So it's worth it.

I'd estimate somewhere between $1500 - $2000 annually. It's tough when you shoot a lot of weird calibers - 10mm, 9x23 Winchester, and 35 Whelen. I suspect that figure will increase sharply as I add 400 Corbon, 41 Action Express, and one of the Lazzeroni cartridges to the mix this year.

Right at $2000 annually.

January 5, 2007, 12:08 PM
Using an average price accross the 4 handgun calibers I reload/shoot most often, my annual amount would be just under $2k.
If I didn't reload, and were buying factory non-premium ammo, that would jump to almost $6300/year.

$400 per month is the budget. Rarely go over.....rarely go under. I buy 1000 rounds at a time for each caliber.
I have a separate full size safe for ammo alone.

Oh my, I don't even want to think about it. For this past year 2006:
Regular range time: 2 or 3 times either at indoor, outdoor or matches. I have 9mm pistols so I can "save" money, but yet I still find myself shooting the same amount of .45 ACP.
Membership @ local indoor range. Free range time = time spent at the range.
Regular range time at San Gabriel Valley Gunclub before it closed down. Now it's Burro Canyon with the Socal THR guys for drills and setting up our own COFs.
USPSA matches: 250 rds of .45 ACP (3 boxes of WWB VP 3 x $22.27 + 7.75% tax = $71.99) each match
Bruce Gray Practical shooting class: 1500 rds of .45 ACP = $359.95
With .308 surplus ammo gone, I started hording S. African ammo.
Trap shooting every once in a while
Then just bought 2K rds of .45 and 2K of 9mm before the new year price increase.
I need to start reloading... :uhoh:

January 5, 2007, 01:45 PM
Well I guess I'll take the low end here.
1,000 .22-$25
1,000 9mm ~$200
Just picked up the .45 but I only bought about $100 so far
Just got the 12 ga. Haven’t even toughed it yet:
That’s like $400 for all of 2006
Please PM for drop-off locations for the annual "Feed My Arms" rally.
Cash donations along with not perishable 9mm, .45, and 12 ga buck will be accepted.

January 5, 2007, 01:46 PM
hmm....
well, I reload, but here are some costs..
12,000 rounds of 40 S&W ammo - My cost - $70/k = $840
3,000 rounds of Blazer 9mm, $120 a case - $360
1500 22 lr Blazer - $10/brick = $30
A case of mixed Kent 3" magnum Steel $10/box x10 = $100
4 cases mixed 12 gauge targets loads # 7.5, $35/case = $140
Misc random stuff loaded for testing, call it 2000 rounds = $250
About $1720 give or take whatever I didn't remember..
The 40 S&W ammo was loaded for ICORE/USPSA and was fired exclusively in my 610. I plan to shoot an equivalent amount this year. Unfortunately, the price has gone up for lead, primers, and powder so it'll cost a bit more this year.

Way to much according to everyone else, a great bargain to me, I reload almost exclusively and order 5.56 surplus by the case. I usually fire between 750-1250 rds a week of various calibers and order cases of 2000 bullets at a time. I do compete and any prize winnings are "recycled" all in all probably 2-3k a yearhttp://www.thehighroad.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=50571&stc=1&d=1168023585

Hmm, tough question, I really haven't been keeping track. I keep track of total rounds in each gun , but not so much the price. The nearest range is quite far though, so I don't get to shoot particularly often. A quick tally in my head of what I shot this year and whats in my closet .. I'd say .. around 7 or 8 hundred, maybe more, maybe less.

Midway and other online retailers seem to get about $1000-$1500 a year from me, around $100 a month give or take.
I buy 9mm and .22LR at walmart, about a box a month. That's another $250. Add in random ammo purchases of another $250, and I spend about $2000 a year throwing lead at high speeds all over heck's half acre.
03Shadowbob
January 5, 2007, 03:51 PM
a lot of you guys really throw the lead downrange! I wish I had the time and cash to do it.
Since you have to buy the ammo from the range where I shoot it's pretty easy to figure out for at least the 9mm.
Go twice a month = 24 times a year
$6 per range visit = $144
2 boxes of 9mm at $11/box = $22 per visit = $528.
total cost = $672 a year give or take.
This is not including my newer P3AT or PT140 so add maybe another $70 for the .40 in ammo and another $50 for .380 ammo.

I have the good grace to have acquaintances that are "in the business".. the ammunition business that is...
Overall I'll spend up to maybe $40/mo at the most on ammo, when I'm invited out with my acquaintances they tell me to not use my own ammo, and I left with a lot of loose 9mm ammo they provided last time...
It's nice to have acquaintances like that. ;)

January 5, 2007, 04:57 PM
Well geez, i go out 3 times a month and spend ~ 140$ per trip on just 9mm, .38 and .22's. Now i've got a .40 that's gonna go up to...180 i guess. Last year, 5000$ by that estimate...this year will be 6500 or so according to the new estimate. Assuming i don't finally get off my ass and buy...a rifle :D
You know. That's a f***ing lot of money.
Alucard, you make me want to stop being an idiot and start reloading my own ammo. Though i wouldn't likely save any money except on the .40 i just bought and any rifle i buy.
kungfuhippie
January 5, 2007, 05:11 PM
I shoot about 200 rds of whatever rifle calibers when I go out.
Due to school I get out 1-2 times a month with rifles, 1-2 times with the handgun, 100-200 rds. 9mm each time.
all these are guestimates;
$250 - 1500 rds. 9mm (reload, wwb, and rotation of JHP)
$90 - 1000 rds. 8x57 (mostly surplus, I try to always have 1000 rds. on hand)
$60 - 500-1000 rds 7.72x54r
$100 - 200 rds. surplus 8x56r (need to start reloading for this one)
$300 - 2000-3000 rds. 7.62x39 (wolfs gotten expensive)
grand total $800+/- (I may have spent more, but lets pretend I didn't:) )
this year I'll be adding a few calibers, starting with .40s&w or .45acp, the .303 the .308 or 30-06... Maybe I should start getting guns that shoot the same caliber;)

Year : 2007
Ammo : Fiocchi 20GT9
Quantity : One box
Amount Total: $3.60
[Farm Supply store, retail $4.79, less 30% plus tax]
2006 - not a clue as the greatest percentage of Ammunition was free. I only recall buying a box here and there of something.
Years past...cannot remember. I have had up to 5 pallets of ammo/ components delivered at one time, not a problem to shoot 35,000 rds of shotgun ammunition alone.
Some members here have seen my truck bed full of ammunition...
Don't shoot like I used to - always been about others. More important to pass forward , heck I only have one partial box of carry loads , the other 4 boxes I gave to others ...did not cost me , part of how my deal works, so pass it forward to another.
Life happens- kids get sick, car breaks, surgery for an elder person...these folks more important than I...
I'll carry hardball if need, I am not that big of a deal...never was, never will, don't want to be.

Let's see, went through about 8,000 rounds of cowboy .38's, probably 10,000 rounds of .22, about 1600 rounds of 12 ga, and a few hundred here and there of .44 spl/mag, .222, .32 acp, and .45 acp. Do I even want to figure the price?
Just got a 1911, and am contemplating shooting USPSA, in addition to SASS. I can feel a call to Dillon coming on...

Have a freind who is a senior member of a SWAT team. He get's me all the handgun and 5.56/.223 I could ever need. I still have to supply my own hunting rifle and .454 Casull ammo, none of which I shoot in high volumes.

I've had to really cramp down on ammo costs. I'll be honest, I tend to save centerfire ammunition up for good stuff, like if I get to take a class or shoot a match or something. I shoot tons of nice cheap .22 LR. I'll shoot like 300 rounds of .22 LR and then about 50-100 rounds of centerfire ammunition, and alternate.

Ben Shepherd, I initially misread this as saying "I've spent around 2-3 thousand this year up to this point." I was thinking, man, it's only January 5! Do you have a machine gun chambered in 6.5mm Arisaka or something?

Taxpayers don't pay for this ammo. Most of it is confiscated and has to be shot up or disposed.

Man, you guys spend a LOT! WOW! Here's what I spend mer month, then per year accordingly.
Per Month:
1000rds. of .22lr=$25.00
100rds. of 7.62x39=$40-50
150-350rds of 12 gauge shells=$30-$70
Per year:
.22lr-$25x12=$300
7.62x39-$300(don't shoot it all the time, I need bulk rate bullets.)
12gauge-$300-$500
Jeez...$1000+ is more than I thought. Ouch. Not to mention clay targets and whatnot.

I prefer not to think about it....I shoot roughly 8000 rounds a year of 45 acp, 9 mm, 357 mag, 38 special, 22lr, 308, and 223

I don't want to talk about it...
I just did my shooting/training/competition budget for 2007, part of which included adding up all the ammo expended in 2006. Between 9mm, .40, .223, and shotgun, I'm up close to $2000 in ammo last year. It'll be more this year.
Sigh.

i spend a bunch on components. only ammo i buy is .22, 380, and 9mm. oh, add .32 acp, but i dont shoot a lot of small stuff. .38S is my low limit and not much of that except in the 642. i prefer to shoot GUNS. i have Rugers in the safe now begging for attention.
ok, how much a year - i have no idea, but surely not as much as some posters admit to.
i cant leave this thread without recommending that if you dont, do, start reloading, it is part of the shooting enjoyment thing. when it is nasty outside you have a hobby to turn to, stocking up for fairer weather. and, those of you spending thousands a year can buy the best reloading tools there is and have a boodle left over for components and taking your best girl to dinner. there was a member on TFL that recommended killing your TV. good idea. i dont watch much but the outdoor channel. the wife reloads her own so we have some "quality" time in the loading room. as an aside, how many guys do you know whose wife has three model 29s. two sixes and a four inch. purty too.
good to see so many ppl doing lots of shooting, reloading or not.

So far this year $0. Last year $0. I don't shoot as often as I like but money has been a bit tight for the past year or so, this leaves me shooting more 22 and some of my reserves. Luckily for me I have quite a bit of reserves still left so I might be able to squeeze out another $0 year.

I DON'T KNOW ANYONE WHO HAS REALLY SAVED ANY MONEY BY RELOADING, MOST PEOPLE MYSELF INCLUDED JUST GO SHOOTING AT LEAST TWICE AS MUCH. IT OPENS UP A WHOLE NEW FIELD IN THIS HOBBY OF OURS IT ALSO CAN ENCOURAGE YOU TO BUY GUNS IN AWESOME CALIBERS THAT YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE CONCIDERED DUE TO COST OF FACTORY LOADS OR AVAILABILITY AND IT'S SOMETHING FUN TO DO WHEN IT'S CRAPPY OUTSIDE.:)

Wow, I've never really added it up and I'm not sure I want to. I know my expenditure just in .22 LR is around $1,000 a year and I shoot centerfire and muzzleloaders about as much as I shoot rimfires. Thank God for reloading, casting and bulk powder discounts.

I take a check for $25 to the gunshop every Saturday. I am stocking up on components as I plan to retire soon and my income is going to plunge. I have about 10k rounds of .22lr on hand and lots of bullets, brass, powder and primers. Monday I will order a thousand .223 bullets as I am getting low on those and the gunshop doesn't have them in bulk.
