....Over/Unders?
...Pump SGs?
...or autos?
My pump SG is easier to clean than my (gas operated) auto. I hope to get an O/U in the near future. Are O/Us easier to clean than other types of shotguns?

My gas op semi gets really dirty and thus needs more cleaning. My friends recoil op semi gets about as dirty as pump guns do so its easier to clean.

My candidate, the old single barrel. Pop it open, scrub the bore, wipe down in and outside with oil. Once a year, take it apart and CLP all the hidden surfaces.
Doubles are not much more difficult, then pumps, then Jamamatics...

O/U's are real easy to clean.
If you use oil to lube, just clean(wipe/brush) the inside of the receiver out and the bbl lugs, etc. Clean bearing surfaces are important.
Re-oil just before you shoot again.
Of course, oily rag on the outside for the finger prints.
Cleaning the bbl... well, you can if you wish. I clean them when I shoot in the rain or put the guns away for the winter.
I do spray a bit of oil in chambers each time I'm done shooting. It prevents the "gold color" from appearing in the chambers.

Easy to clean goes to the O/U and single barrel, then comes a decently engineered semi, then a pump. My favorite semi's can be totally stripped without tools of any kind, try that with your favorite pump gun. My favorite semi also has the same amount of seperate parts as the 870, hmmmmmm.

Easiest to clean for Jim out of your choices:
1) Over/Under
2) Recoil operated semiauto OR pump shotgun
3) Semiauto shotgun (gas operated)

I may buck the trend slightly here. I clean two shotguns (a Browning 425 O/U and a Benelli Montefeltro autoloader) at least once per week.
The Benelli takes slightly less time, even if I pull the bolt and wipe it down. That particular shotgun is especially easy to work on. I even prefer it (again very slightly) to cleaning my 870, since I don't have to align anything (like the action bars) when replacing the bolt.
The O/U takes more time only because I'm fairly anal and completely swab out both barrels.
Gas-operated autoloaders are definitely the least easy to clean. Generally not difficult, but certainly more time-consuming.
If you throw singles into the mix, I'd think that would have to be the ultimate in simple.

Yes the Benelli is very easy to clean .But the point is to clean the guns. The Benelli gunsmith once told me that 50% of the guns returned because they wouldn't work only required a cleaning.

Part of the ease of cleaning is the ease of reassembly. Here the gas gun comes out worst. I've owned two and they both were at times tricky to get all the parts put back in place in the right order.
Worst gun for this I've ever owned was a Ruger #1. It was as close as I've come to bringing in a brown bag special. That's where you take all the gun parts and bring them to a gunsmith with a request to reassemble.
