Actually, I was just curious as to the laws regarding personal security detail in places that normally restrict ownership and concealed carry. I don't mean government security for dignitaries and the like. I'm talking about hired security for private use, similar to what someone like O' Donnell or other celebrities might be able to afford. Can they carry in Cali, Chicago, NYC, DC, etc? How is that legislated?

Then I thought, well, what the heck do they use assuming they can use anything at all besides bad breath, an unpleasant stare and a choke hold.

I would hope someone I had for protection knew more than just how to fire a gun. Most of those guys are ex-military and know hand-to-hand self defense.

Seriously there are all sorts of different laws about armed security state to state, it's hard to say.

I believe that the standard practice for most armed security personnel is to have a Concealed Carry permit in their own State and in States frequently traveled in. They also rely on reciprocity where applicable. However, when traveling to a place like Washington D.C, the normal security detail would go unarmed but would hire armed locals, off duty types for example, to work along side with.

Seriously, the laws are vastly different for each state. Many states do not/will not recognise the permits from other states.

If celebs have guys around who get to carry pretty much anywhere, it is assumed that they have permits from . . . pretty much everywhere.

So, it would be reasonable to assume that "personal security" is a valid "reason to carry" even in states fond of "access denied" as their standard response on your permit application.

So, what are the licensing requirements for hanging out a shingle as a "personal security" operative? Would you have to be a PI? Do you just file the fictitious name, open a bank account, pay for business license and pass go (collect $200)?

Or would you have to prove you're protecting somebody REALLY IMPORTANT or REALLY FAMOUS (or are those the same thing)?

I do remember when RO had her big dust up with Tom Selleck over guns and the NRA. Rosie got a lot of flack for her Kmart ads( a store that sold ammo/firearms) and for employing armed security/EP agents to watch her kids :rolleyes: .

Her double standards and rude conduct make me like her less and less :cuss: .

in Texas, there is a difference between someone with a CHL and someone with a PPO (Personal Protection Officer - Level IV) License.

a CHL only allows you to carry a handgun for self protection or protection of a 3rd party, but not for hire.

if you are going to be a bodyguard, or paid/compensated as the services of a bodyguard or as a part of a PSD, then you are required to have a different license. this license is also issued from the Texas DPS (Dept of Public Safety) but it is issued from their Private Security Bureau. you would need to take the non-commissioned (non-gun carrying) portions of their training called Level I and Level II. then you would need to take the Level III training which is the Commissioned Security Offficer training (40-50 hours of training and allows you to carry a gun as a uniformed, armed security officer).

then, if you want to be a plainclothes bodyguard you have to take a Level IV training program (about 16 hours). you also have to take and pass the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory) which is a written psychological exam to ensure you are psychologically fit for duty (i guess). it is the same written portion of the psychological exam that most LEO's take for their jobs.

with all of those steps then you can work as a bodyguard for hire, in Texas. there is currently a LEO exemption where LEO's can work as Level III/IV officers in Texas.

This could have been the usual Internet BS, but it's possible.

As far as most "celebrity" bodyguards, I'd guess their sworn "US Marshalls" or some other foolish designation to allow concealed carry in all the states.
