Lighter Trigger on 10/22

May 29, 2003, 08:25 PM
I have my 10/22 completed.
10/22 Stainless reciever
Green Mountain Fluted 18" SS barrel
VQ Target Hammer
VQ Bolt Buffer
Fajen Thumbhole Stock
6-20X40mm Bushnell ScopeChief

Question is there another trick to lighten the trigger on the 10/22 even more with the current VQ Target Hammer. My current groups are about the size of a dime right now.(@50 yards 10 shot groups) I know with a better trigger and more time on the range it will get better. (tempted to go with the VQ trigger group unless I can take another 1/2lb off the trigger. :) )

A VQ or Power Custom trigger group with the lighter springs and shims should do the trick. I installed the Power Custom kit in my 10/22 and its been great.

The ultimate 10/22 trigger on the market right now is the one made by Tony Kidd. It's a complete drop-in replacement for the trigger housing, and provides an ultra-smooth two-stage pull that is adjustable down to as little as six ounces. At $279, it's not cheap, but you can't get any better.

If that's too expensive for you, I've also used the Clark Custom hammer/trigger/sear kit for about $60. It gives you a very respectable two to three pound pull with no creep or overtravel.

I have the target hammer and spring kit installed. The pull is currently around 2 1/2 lbs. Does anyone know a way were I can squeeze out another 1/2 less out of the trigger components. I'm not really looking to spend 200 bones on a VQ yet or 300 on a Kidd. A sub 2# trigger would be sweet!

STI is now making a 10/22s. They have their own trigger unit for $310. Haven't heard any reviews on it.

Don't worry, I'll buy your 10/22 from you and you can move on to that STI. Deal?

I was planning on going with the Kidd trigger on my latest 10/22, but now I have to find out more about the STI. Any details ?
Does anyone know if you can get the Kidd trigger in silver ?

You can get the Kidd in any color you want, as long as it's black. I've got one on an otherwise stainless rifle, and it shoots so well, you don't care what color it is.

Well, I will care what color it is, but it won't prevent me from buying one.
I was looking at one in a store today.
Now if I could only get the gun...........................

I am also going to need a stock, and a scope mount. I may end up using a scope mount I already have that I bought from Jack Weigand, but as I remember, it is too low for a full sized scope.

Send the receiver to Tom at Volquartsen. Actually, the first thing I'd do, is call & outline your desires. Then, after discussion, I'd send it in. 'Twere me, & it was, I'd also let him mount the barrel to the receiver. I don't know what prices are running these days, but I'd think, you'll find the cost to be reasonable.

Especially the match trigger w/overtravel setscrew. The sear notch and trigger group mating surfaces were pretty darned smooth right out of the box, but I did use some Flitz and a cloth wheel to bring them to a shine. Then, just a dab of TW-25B on the parts, and in they went. It stays right at 2.5 pounds on the NRA check weights, which is fine for me coming from a blowback autoloader. Those shim washers are a godsend, too, they make for a solid trigger setup! ;)
