has anyone ever thought about mounting a set of ghost ring sights on a heat shield?

it would be easy to install, no permanent modifications to the weapon, and the whole shebang can be removed for wingshooting.

Andrew, not a bad idea but how secure are the heatshields out on the market these days?

I'm curious as I have never toyed with a shotgun with a heatshield.

beats me, but if you screw the rear end down to the reciever, the front probably won't go anywhere.

Peep sights in general need to have the rear near the eye, this includes GRs.

Not sure that heat shields are made precisely enough that zero would be maintained after removal and replacement.

Creative tho, Andrew. Keep it up.

Well, the design I had in my head was was one where the heatshield extended over the reciever far enought oplace the rear in the proper position. the rear sight is then screwed down into the existing holes, and the front is clamped around the barrel.

if the clamp is such that you can remove it from the shield, you might be able to dissassemble it without removing th heatshield.

For a rifle-sight setup I think that your idea will do just dandy. Maybe even a "scout" setup will shine with your idea.

As far as ghost rings, they need to be as far back as possible, near your eyeballs. Peep sights function fairly well due to their ability to gather light and throw it directly into your gumballs.

Would this idea deal with the problem of re-zeroing after removing the barrel for easy cleaning? I shoot mostly lots of slugs so the lead build-up is an issue... taking the barrel off and doing serious reps on it is the only way I've ever heard of.

To me this means that every sight system I've used... which entail a receiver mounted back-end sight ... is screwed. With my basic front bead, my eye is the rear sight but the front might be different each time?

I understand about shooting with no regard for the bead, but that is not what one has to do with slugs at 100 yards... and, I can consistently hit a man sized target COM with a bead sight at that range.

Maybe "rifle sights" with both parts mounted on the barrel is the way to ensure post-removal consistency? Is there something about "sight radius" that comes into play here?

Would the heat shield be with the barrel or the receiver? If with the barrel, maybe this is the answer?

I know, so many questions, so little time to test all of the scenarios at the range (gun-free Chicago, ya know).

it's mostly a way to have a no gunsmithng set of ghost ring sights on a sun that has the reciever holes but no front tisght holes.

i see your point, though.

what about having the thing clamped to the barrel such that the barrel can be removed, and have the rear sight canteliever over the reciever? when you remove the barrel the whole unit comes with it.

cantilever (http://www.remington.com/firearms/shotguns/1187spsd.htm)

Perhaps, a mount like that?

Have it a little lower, so it fits closer to the receiver and silver solder a front sight?

yeah, pretty much. the rear sight would be much lower, touching the reciever.

the front sight/heat shield/ rear sight would all be one unit, and solidly clamped to the barrel.

I'll talk to dad about this when he gets home, and i'll see if i can talk him into helping me make one.

Perhaps trying to figure out how they clamp this sucker down might be a great way to start.
