Greetings all,

If you're in the Austin area, and would like to devote as little as one evening a month to getting more college kids to shoot, this is your chance!

The UT Rifle & Pistol Club (UTRPC) runs the on-campus shooting range at UT Austin, 6:30PM-9:00PM, Mon-Thurs. We're about to open up for the new semester next week.

Before last semester, we got maybe 40 student visitors per semester. Due to a heavy recruiting push (largely involving THR members) we had over 500 unique visitors last semester. We can easily beat that this semester, but we need more coaches! If we don't have enough personnel to keep an eye on the kids, we can't operate at full capacity.

Requirements:

-- Willing to come by and just try it out for one evening, no obligation
-- Help out the main RSO by coaching, issuing ammo, and just keeping an eye on things
-- Know absolute basics of gun safety and handling
-- A good ambassador for the shooting community: courteous, patient, and helpful

That's pretty much it.

If you're interested in dropping by and giving it a try, drop me a PM and we'll set you up with a time. The range is located at the UT Austin main campus, next to the Gregory Gym.

Here's a few pic threads to give you an idea of what we do:

If I was a few hundred miles closer, I'd come out some. My daughter graduated there last May - and until I mentioned it to her, did not know range existed. ' Glad to see the range up and introducing new shooters to the sport. :)

Pick me!

Haha just kidding. It's going to be interesting meeting THR members this semester.

I went last year and enjoyed it. I have let Matthew down since and have not made it back. I'm shooting for one Thursday a month.

Matthew, I'll get in touch with you about a good time to come down.

Looks like you have a nice facility. .22 only?

Who knows, you might save a few lives introducing young men and women to firearms.

The club is .22 and also air pistol/rifle. I've been going to help about once/month for a couple of months now. I would also like to know when the range will re-open for the new semester.

We'll be opening the first day of class, which is this coming Tuesday.

Gotten a few emails off a few gun websites thus far, this is looking good.

The larger array of Austin shooters we have dropping by to provide training and supervision, the smoother the whole process will be.

I'm still holding down Thursday evening, but I will (eventually) graduate, so the more of a community we have, the better.

I've managed to make it down there the last two Thursdays and give matt a hand. A great experience for any shooter to introduce people to the sport. There are a few that know nothing and hold the gun like it'll bite them that go from scattering rounds on the target to some gret grouping in one night, and others that are fairly proficient already. Some are interested in the basics and some will request a rifle and work to the full extent of the range.

This Thursday I think we had 35 or so people from 6:30-9:00 come through, and I'm sure he'd appreciate more people coaching down there. They would really benefit from more individual attention. Plus it's an excuse to shoot things, and that's always fun too.

i have to get my butt down there, im actually back on night shift now so my biological clock will be more in line with showing up at night.

ill try to make it down there Mon or Tues. Matthew i have a question, if it is .22 only are they okay if i bring an AR15 with a Ciener .22 kit or a suppressed Walther P22?

just something to make the .22's more FUN! :D

I finally made it out last night to help Matthew at the UT Rifle & Pistol Club and I really enjoyed myself.

Frankly, I was surprised at the turn out. At one point, it looked like the range was full. There was a good mix of people who had obviously shot before and a bunch who were brand new. I had a chance to work with some of the new shooters and it was a lot of fun.

If you're in the Austin area, and you've been thinking about helping out, then drop Matthew a PM. You really will have a good time.

Paging Tom Gresham, paging Tom Gresham.

Tom, it isn't that far from Louisiana to Austin, I bet that doing a live Gun Talk from the UT Rifle range would be a great show.
