A local gun-and-pawn has two nice .357 pistols. One is a NIB blue steel Taurus 635 snub for $269 and the other a Ruger Security 6, used at 85-90% condition, 4" barrel for $199. I checked the cylinder timing on the Ruger and it seems fine. Any opinions??

Ruger Security Six is the one.

Not bashing Taurus, just not a fan.

Ala Dan beat me to it; I also heartily endorse Mr. March's excellent revolver checkout essay. Kept me from buying a real lemon recently.

Thank you much! I'll save about $70 by getting the Ruger too. I referred back to the TFL thread after looking the guns over. The Ruger appears to have light holster wear and that is it. No pitting or discoloration & the cylinder timing seems fine.

Solinvictus70;

I will be putting up for bid my Security Six which I have had as original owner about 25 years and has less than 200 rounds (mostly .38 specials) down the tube. It is a stainless steel model with a 4 inch barrel. It is just like new and you are NOT buying from a sleazy gun dealer who picked up the gun at some local show for a song from who knows who. Those songs often have bad endings. I will be offering it on auction at a starting bid of $295. If you are interested in it at that price, I would sell to you and not list it. In fact I would also throw in my Safariland shoulder holster. I do have pictures which I could email if you or anyone else is interested. You can email me at wba971939@aol.com

As someone who owns both Ruger and Taurus pistols I'd get the Security Six if it checks out good.

I like both my Taurus revolvers and have no intention of getting rid of either one, but the Ruger is the better deal in this case.

Another recommendation for the Ruger. What many folks don't know is that if you send your handgun to Ruger, they re-finish it for $55.00, flat rate, and at the same time will check the internals and repair any components that are out of spec. (including fixing timing issues, etc.) AT NO CHARGE. Had this done to a couple of older Security-Sixes, and it was a great way to get a gun into factory-new condition at a very reasonable price.

Ruger :). Assuming it passes the checkout :D.

The Taurus is an OK gun. The Ruger Security/Service series is something special, one of the best personal defense revolvers ever made.

I am a Taurus guy.

Ruger revolvers don't usually do anything for me (I know that is a dangerous statement). I'll probably eventually buy a GP100 just since I am a revolver guy- I think I need it to compare to my 586 and to give it a chance.

That said, you are making the right choice in getting the Ruger.

The Speed/Security/Service Six series are my one exception. They really do seem an interesting gun- and from all accounts they are incredible guns. Very well made, very sturdy (almost as strong as the GP100 yet nearly the same size and weight as a K-frame), generally accurate and well finished, plus it is something that you won't see everyone on the firing range and their mothers with one. What isn't to like? I am still kicking myself for not picking up a 3" early version that I saw a couple months back :banghead: .

The $70 price difference clinches it. If you have the money to spend you'd be nuts not to pick it up.
