I finally went ahead and picked up one from a local shop that was on consignment. I almost got a .45 instead, but the 9 came in the original box w/extra mag & manual. It's a 1998-marked weapon, V1 trigger, and excellent plus condition. It's not unfired but very close to it I'd say, and it was a steal of a deal, like buying a new gun except for the significant price difference.
I'd been considering the purchase for a few months and the more I read about the pistol and its function the more I thought that I'd be interested in it. I almost went with a Sig 226 that I'd found, but the H&K was too good a deal to pass up. It fits my hands fairly well, although truth be told I haven't found too many guns that don't. I like the less agressive texture on the side of the grips, and the grip angle is decent. It feels a bit more blocky and more like a tool than a 1911, kind of like a Glock feels to me, and I like the size for concealment and IDPA.
So, now I have a pistol that I can shoot in two IDPA categories, that has every possible trigger function (SA cocked & locked, DA/SA safety on, DA/SA safety off) and has a respectable mag capacity of 13. (No 9mm versus XXX OT discussions, please, I wanted to talk about the weapon specifically).
Added bonus: I can rack the slide with the safety on for a chamber check.
