ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - Police were investigating a shooting spree in a business district that left three people dead and sparked a standoff with the alleged gunman.
Police said the gunman, identified as Carl Knapp, fled to a nearby pawn shop where he barricaded himself for about three hours and eventually shot himself in the chest.
Knapp, 48, was hospitalized for the wound, which was not life-threatening, Albuquerque police Detective Jeff Arbogast said.
Police accused Knapp of fatally shooting two men and a woman around 4 p.m. in front of a remodeling business in a busy area of northeast Albuquerque.
Arbogast identified the victims as Jane Johnston, 42, Steven Goodwin, 49, and Greg McGuire, whose age was not immediately known.
"It appears it may be related to some sort of domestic violence situation," Arbogast said.
Arbogast said police received a 911 call from the manager of the pawn shop who told them someone with a gun had entered the business.
The manager was able to flee. After about three hours of negotiations with Knapp, SWAT team members stormed the pawn shop and took him into custody shortly after they heard what sounded like a gunshot from inside the store.
