THE FIRST DAY: Protesters introduce 'tool kit' at cathedral news conference

Opponents of Minnesota's new handgun permit law said Wednesday that they aren't through fighting the measure even after it has gone into effect.

Members of the Coalition to End Gun Violence held a news conference on the steps of the Cathedral of St. Paul to unveil the church's new "no guns'' sign and to publicize the group's "tool kit'' to combat the law.

Included in the tool kit: a "Repeal Conceal-Carry" bumper sticker, a "Gun Free Home" window sticker, tips on lobbying lawmakers and sample resolutions for cities and churches. Among the suggestions it gives is to ask employers to make workplaces gun-free and to ask local churches to ban guns.

"Despite the Legislature's decision, the question how we Minnesotans will share our public spaces is far from clear,'' said the Rev. James Erlandson, co-chairman of the coalition. "We have a right to safe communities free from the threat of firearms.''

Among the speakers was Auxiliary Bishop Richard Pates of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.

"I'm troubled by this legislation,'' he said. "Common sense says it will increase gun violence.''

Supporters of the gun law said such calls for change have been common in other states that have adopted similar legislation.

"We find once the law takes effect it quickly disappears,'' said Todd Adkins, deputy director of the National Rifle Association. "Even our opponents in the not-too-distant future will say this right for law-abiding citizens is not problematic for public safety.''

Personally (looking at Darrin's pic) the sign I'd want on the door would read something like No Trespassing!
Trespassers may be shot.
Survivors will be prosecuted.Like most people on this forum, my opinion of gun control is probably best described as :cuss:
We'll see how successful this is when the number robberies and muggings start to go down. Or when MN's carjackers start getting shot.

Cheers,
ErikM

:D OT: Anyone here remember the computer game Maniac Mansion? Now there was a nice 'no-trespassing' sign. Trespassers will be horribly mutilated! :D

He should read the bible. Few verses come to mine. God helps those who help themselves. Let he who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. etc etc.

"We have a right to safe communities free from the threat of firearms.''

See this VERY intelligent people with common sense? It's the baaaad guns, not the criminals. "We have to understand them, thy had suuuch a baaaad childhood".

"Common sense says it will increase gun violence.''

And the facts say the opposite, meaning that their "common sense" is totally insane.

Support our criminals, ban guns!

Warning thread Hijacking ahead:

"God helps those that help themselves" is a Benjamin Franklin quote; it is not in the bible.

This hijacking was brought to you as a sincere, information sharing excercise only, we now return you to our regularly scheduled thread.

Ayoob had a column a while ago where he mentioned that for years the local paper printed an list of CCW permit holders annually and that provoked a rash of break-ins every year.

"Common sense" says that gun-free window sticker in an invitation to disaster.

Somebody needs to infiltrate these jokers (a la these guys (http://www.protestwarrior.com/)) and mix in some "Unarmed Victim" and "I won't defend myself. Rob me." stickers.

Maybe a map of the home too. With location of valuables and the number of a local "easy" pawn shop. Maybe make them sandwiches too.:fire: :cuss:

"Common sense says it will increase gun violence.''

Obviously common sense is code for emotional knee jerk reactions.

This has been predicted for every state that has adopted "shall issue" legislation, and in every state where it has been predicted, the exact OPPOSITE is true.

These fools continue to think that somehow, for some reason, their situation in their state is going to be somehow different from the rest of the nation.

If that's the BEST "evidence" that they can come up with, there shouldn't be much to worry about.

Back in 1994 or so when Virginia was debating this, Jim Brady rolled his way up to the podium at what I believe was a joint session of the Virginia Legislature, but it may have been just the Virginia House.

After receiving a standing ovation, he spoke against the proposed CCW law. One quote sticks in my mind... "This law means more guns, and more guns means more violence."

A few hours later the Virginia House overwhelmingly approved the new CCW law.

Wait a sec - they're going to PUT "gun free home" stickers up?

Man, that rocks!!

This is cooler than human shields.

Who says they can't make the world a better place (at their own expense).

(BTW - they may put up the "repeal concealed carry" stickers; but I'd be willing to bet nobody's stupid enough to put up "gun free home").

On one level, I have to admire their idealism.

On another, I dread the day when these idealists experience a crime.

Any way to find out how many actually put up the "gun free home" sticker?

And how many had "accidents"?
