i beleve the leupold Mark series tactical scopes are the only ones that can handle the recoil of the .50 cal rifles so i guess the quailty isnt in question lol.
Leupold is top notch though for price and quality.

Well, not quite... there's always Nightforce, US Optics, Schmidt & Bender, Swarovski, etc. Leupolds are quite good though and that's what I have on my Barrett.

Crow,
I am unable to find any reference to a "Mark 2 Tactical Scope" on leupold's website, even in their new items section.
You don't mean "Mark 4", do you?.

We need to get things straight.............
Leupold lenses are made overseas. The box says made in the USA. You have to remember that means, "assembled" in the USA. I own a number of Leupold scopes, I love them , I shoot them and reccomend them. But do not fool yourself in thinking that they are a 100% made America product.

not sure if i worded that first post right, what i ment was the Mark series scopes are the only leupold scopes that can handle the recoil of the .50 cal.

Well I've called Leupold and they said they would be shipping them out at the end of FEB. so there is a little wait. Hopefully by the time I finally need it the price will be lowered a bit. The mark 4's are a little too much money for me and the overall ability of the mark 2 is just right for what I want anyway. I was going to be mounting it on a rem 700 sps in .308, kind of a hunting slash fun gun at an extended range distance lol. I think a harris bipod is going to be next after the scope and then a blackhaw cheek accessory rest + shell holder will be next on it, then I'll try to find a nice sling. Over all I think the rig wont be a bad shooter for the overall price..

I'm pretty sure the metal parts are all made here. It's not just assembled here.
Where exactly do the lenses come from, and why would they bother making lenses? Lots of companies make fine lenses in other places, and making their own wouldn't improve the scope one bit. Could even detract from it, and would certainly add to the price.
So for all intents and purposes, it is "made in America".

Well, their latest ad campaign is something like: "Don't worry Germany, you still make the best beer."
Kind of hypocritical if they are making a big deal out of made in the USA but are getting their glass from someplace else.

There's a lot more to a good scope than glass. Why would they make their own glass? They design their scopes, build the housings and mechanisms, and then specify and source glass. Boeing doesn't make their own Tires or engines. Should they?
Look, there are lots of lens makers in the world. Some of them make riflescopes too, but so what? If you made surveying equipment, should you also spend a mountain of money to make lenses, or should you buy them from someone else?
I sorta see your point, but it's kinda trivial.

I guess there are fedgov rules for labeling country of origin . . . . . not sure if it is raw material cost percentage, or total value percentage or what.
Bottom line is I would have selected a different ad campaign if the key component (at least perceptually) of my product was not made in the country I was bragging about or if I was in anyway relying on some fedgov "85% domestic content rule" in order to call my product Made in the USA.
But I'm not making a big deal over it - just an observation.
Frankly, I'd be surprised if it is true.

I think all that other stuff is at least as important as the lenses. It's the whole design. Leupold has no history of lens making, so why would they start. There are quite a few lens makers in the world. Just take the best and put them into a scope design. They don't make their aluminum billets either I bet, what if they were made in Canada, would that make the thing less "made in America"?
