I have just purchased a S&W Model 10 with a C197 serial number. Can anyone give me any info on it, such as manfacturing date?

Is that the entire serial number or are there any more digits?

If not you are looking at a very early C-serial number model, sometime in mid-1948.

Well done, would be worth getting a letter from S&W about a gun that old. The letter will pay for itself when you go to sell it, if you decide too. That was made at the absolute Peak of S&W's manufacturing prowess.
