:confused: I replaced my 590 stock with a Hogue overmold stock. I am very pleased with that part. I also attempted to replace the front hand guard with a Hogue, however, I am running into difficulty here. I cannot figure out how to take the plastic guard off the action. ??? On the front, there looks to be two slots on the inner tube...but it doesn't look like a nut to me...looks like one smooth internal tube. Is there a special tool to do this. I am looking for advice here...thanx.

Yes, you have to unscrew the "Action Slide Tube Nut" to remove the forend of your stock. It is best to remove the "Action Tube Assembly" from the shotgun first. You can use piece of metal bar of the same size as the slots on on the nut to remove it.

brownells sell a special tool for doing this but I can seem to find it on line

Aha...I got it...seems I needed a tube nut wrench (cheapest was 334000023) and ordered it from Brownells. Hmmm, one would think that piece of intel would be included in the instructions...coming with the replacement forend. Ah, well...live and learn. BTW...thanks for responding justsurvivingincalifornia. I was beginning to think nobody here ever replaced their forends.

I did.

But my Tac-Star grips came with instructions and the OEM forearm removal tool...no problems.

I have the same problem with my 870.

Guess I'll have to look around the barn for something to make into that tool.:)

The part they sell for this task is really kind of a sucker part. No offense intended to anyone who bought one, but well.. it is. There are any number of things around most houses that you can use to turn the tube nut. I recently changed out the forend on a 590 and it took me all of 5 minutes.. if that .. of looking around the room for something that would do the job.

daysleeprx: You're absolutely right. I shouldn't have made a statement like that without an example. :o

So here it is. For this thread I have just used all of the following items to remove and replace the nut in question. From left to right in the picture is.. A FAL mag loader (not recommended, too thin), A part intended for hanging a small Ironing board on a door ( this one actually worked the easiest ), A small steel file, A good strong fork, and a throwing knife ( used the back of the handle ). All of these things worked (on a 590). All you need is something stong and metal that will fit in the grooves and allow you some leverage. So as I said.. paying for the tool is pointless.

thanx all...to be honest, I already attempted a ready made tool and began to strip out the slots...at which time, I decided to get the proper tool to do the job. What the hey, I have tool boxes full of neat (special) tools only needed once or a few times. This baby was on tight!
