Smith and Wesson pistols?

Has anyone used or owned them? I have not noticed their name brought up at all and was wondering if they made a good autoloader.

All of mine have been great guns, they are stone cold reliable, accurate and built like a tank, my 41 and Performance Center autos are the smoothest and most accurate handguns I own in 22, 9mm and 45acp

Ditto to what Gixerman100 said.
I have a 1006, a 1086, and a 945.
Awesome guns, all.

Go look in the pistols subforum at www.smith-wessonforum.com. Yeah, I have a bunch. I'm a big fan of S&Ws. Let's see:
6906
4013TSW
5906
5946
5943TSW
3913TSW
4046
4586
457
4516
Sigma 9VE
Sigma 357V
M&P 9
SW99 Compact .40
Out of all these, my favorite is probably my 6906.

5906TSW, 4566TSW.
Over 11K through the 9, and 8K through the 45. Big, big fan. Rock solid, accurate, consistent. They're my interchangeable carry guns. I trust them.

Smith makes the best revolvers in the world, period. But I've owned only one S&W auto, a 4006 bought new, and it was unreliable. Would FTF one round every couple of mags. Sent it to the factory, but when it came back there was no improvement. Sold it.
Not sure whether the blame lies with the .40 cartridge, which I think is generally acknowledged is hard to feed, or with my particular sample of 4006.

Never did care for the ergos or safeties of the metal S&W pistols, but they alwys went BANG at the appropriate time and never seemed to break.
The Sigma was also reliable but had the worst trigger in the world.
I am a real fan of the M&P polymer S&W platform, and have four of 'em as my daily carry pistols.

My S&W 3906 is boring in some ways. It is built like a tank, utterly reliable, easy to shoot, and accurate.

I've got a SW99 in .45 ACP but to be quite honest, it's not my favorite handgun and among my .45s, it's at the bottom. The trigger isn't all that great and the recoil spring is quite heavy. Today I took it to the range and ran it through the AFQC course of fire and while I can manage to get expert with a lot of other handguns, I was happy to just qualify with the SW99. Accuracy just wasn't that good IMHO. I may wind up swapping it out for an M&P when the .45 ACP version comes out and see how S&W did this time.

My agency was the first to issue autos and 9mm starting in 1968 until 2000 when Glock got the bid. I still carry a 6904 as my CCW. S&W autos are under-appreciated and not the gee-whiz rage of the plastic guns of today. As gc70 mentioned the 3906 (and similar models) are boring. They just keep working, no complaining, no problems. Just load the mags and keep on shooting. They work. For the S&W plastic guns as rbernie mentioned the Sigma is very reliable but its trigger is not as good as others; however, many prefer the grip of the Sigma.

I have the S&W 915. Is there a way to smooth out the trigger? It's not as smooth as my HK's.

Gudel,
Just keep shooting it. That did it for my 915. It smoothed out real nice around the 2500rnd mark on my sample. Aside from that I've owned a variety of the all steel service models and aside from a few quirks they all were extremely reliable.

I think the older 5906 is one of the best-looking autopistols ever made ... I also love the 4506, the 3913 and the 4006.
Overengineered, sturdy, stone-cold reliable and usually capable of pretty darn good accuracy. Heavy, yes ... But many of us harbor a sneaking fondness for the silver Smith semi-autos ...

yeah I don't believe mine reached that many rounds. I guess I'll keep on shooting it. Looks like I get used to the trigger too, last time I was shooting it, my group reall tightened up.

After we transitioned to 9mm models and started using them, I became impressed with them. Never thought much about them before that, though.
Having watched what's conservatively estimated at more than a million rounds fired downrange since about 1990, and having been a factory certified LE armorer for S&W (as well as some other manufacturer's firearms), I've long since been impressed enough with them that they've become the significant majority of handguns in my personally owned, 'working' collection.
Personally, I prefer Traditional Double Action (DA/SA) models ...

Wow, Gixerman... those are some NICE lookin' pistols!
Funny, I always thought of S&W's autos as "cop guns" - save for their 1911s. I guess because that's what my uncle and other local officers carried around here in the 80's. I can't count how many times I've said I didn't care for the look of their autos. Guess I can eat my words on that as well now...

I have yet to find a S&W pistol that fit my hands....I've had a 4506, 1076 and a larger 9mm that I forget the model designation :( But for those that they fit, these guns are very reliable, robust & dependable.
Ask me about wheelguns & you'll get a slightly diff't answer ;)

S&W Autoloaders are some of my favorite guns. My main carry gun is a 6946 with a 3.5 inch barrel, 12+1 rounds and great feel.
If you have big hands get a double stack version and if smaller hands get the single stack versions. Check the S&W forum for more information.

S&Ws are very good pistols , I'm currently going through a midlife crisis so instead of wasting my money on a Porche and a hot young blondes I opted for increasing my S&W pistol collection .

Besides the pic of the newer S&W 1911 that I posted, I have owned
several Smith & Wesson auto-loaders. Namely, several 39-2's, 2x59's,
a 6906, and this S&W 1911. All have been flawless in function and
reliability. BTW, there is not a firearm made that has the beauty of
a NIB factory nickel model 39-2 9m/m. Simply put, its a goregous
firearm that was really ahead of its time~!;) :D

I have a 6906 that I bought for the paltry sum of $290......in the box with spare magazines, all manuals, night sights and brand new Galco holster.
I bought it "just because" but it carries nicely and shoot pretty good to. I think they are under-rated guns.

10-ring,
If you have not found a Smith auto that does not fit your hands yet then you either have some weird hands or are not trying too hard. S&W probably has the largest variety of semi-auto guns on the market today then all of the manufacturers combined together. I don't know how they keep up with them all or if anyone can remember all of the model #'s they have made in the past twenty years.
aaronkelly,
How about them 6906's? Shoot superbly and carry excellent. I have been trying to check out the new-new 4013's as they look like they are built off of the 6906 frame. I agree that the 6906 is very under rated and mostly over-looked.

Smith and Wesson pistols?
Bah, they're worthless! Worthless I say!
Send them all to me at this address:
:D
No, I can't say "worthless" is how I describe S&W autoloaders of the 3rd generation. Come to think of it, very many of the 2nd generation weren't at all shabby! About the only thing that needs improvement out of the box, for my taste, would be the DA/SA trigger.

I have yet to find a S&W pistol that fit my hands....
What was the problem? Too wide from side to side? Too long in the handle, front to back? Too short (couldn't get enough fingers on it)?
I have odd smallish hands. The Older 4013 fits my right hand perfect but terribly in my left hand. Oh well. The 5906 feels fine in my left hand, but not perfect, and it feels wrong in my right hand.

I have the sw39 9mm. works like a champ, easy to strip/clean and maintain, and a reasonable perfomer (doesnt jam like my High Standard). Wouldn't give it up.

I carry a SW 5906 almost every day. I love mine. I've never had a FTF or any kind of problem of any kind with it.
My favorite thing about it is the look though. It's just a fine looking weapon and comes standard with all the doohickie gimmickry that commonly gets added aftermarket:
Ambidextrous safety
Fronstrap serrations
3 dot sights
rear sight serrations
recessed and flushed takedown pin
checkered trigger guard
high cut under the trigger guard
It's got a great feel in the hand and points very naturally right where I want it to.

I own a 908 and a CS-9.......uterly relable......never a hitch. I'm a wheel-man so they don't get carried or shot much....but when I want to go "pistol" I reach for the Smith's. ( Actually I have a 9mm Beretta Cougar I like too...but that's another thread. )

All I can say about S&W 3rd Generation pistols are that they are solid, dependable, well made and will last a lifetime. Many can be found on the used market for good prices. Even the first and second generations are very good pistols though they can be hard to find at good prices. The 1911 series is all around excellent pistols for the price. The Sigma series was a bad joke, even though they where reliable pistols. The new M&P series seems to have a loyal following though they are too new to know if they will give Glock a run for the money. I

+1 for the S&W 3 Rd. generation DAO autos. The 4586 in particular is a great buy for a 45 ACP auto. The Sigma's I personally don't care for ..........

great guns. I have a 59 from 1979 still shoots great, all metal although alloy frame. Just got a 910s with crimson trace grips which is nice and a couple generations after the old 59. have now fallen for SIG's very smooth and still very safe DA/SA action. For me the SIG shoots better but I'll always keep and add S&W to my collection. If it's good and made in USA I have to support them. Go to a range and rent everything to see how it works in your hand. Just don't let price make the decision..

I LOVE my 4506-1. NEVER had a malfunction of any kind. Only drawback is she's a bit on the heavy side.

My first semi-auto pistol was a 5904 (a "third generation", 15-shot 9mm, blue steel slide, aluminum frame and adjustable sights) back in 1991. It functioned perfectly - 90% of my criteria for a good gun - but was not as accurate as the SIG P228 I traded it in on. (One would expect increased accuracy for $200 more.;)) And I'm extremely pleased with the M&P 9mm compact I bought recently. I'm keeping an eye out for a 3913.

I have a S&W 4006 and love it. It is also favored by many LE agencies. It is an excellent firearm.
