What's a good .41 magnum?

I really like this cartridge, but it's expensive to shoot. What's the best model gun for this cartridge? Something double action with a six shot cylinder and AT LEAST 4" barrel.

Smith Model 57?

For me I would like to have a S&W Mod 58, 4" heavy barrel, fixed sights, square butt.
It would serve as a big brother to my 357 Mod 13 3" barrel, fixed sights, round butt.

I'm in the market for a blued Smith & Wesson N frame model 57 .41 magnum. I've been in the market for one a long time, but haven't found a good one at a reasonable price.

In DA, the 657 is still being made.
I have one from 2000, and it's an excellent handgun.

If you want a very tough .41 Magnum you might look for a Ruger Redhawk. They are not as smooth as the Smith 57s, but they are big, tough guns.

accurate, strong, and able to change barrel length and configuration.
57,58 OR 657 ARE ALL GREAT--
The 58 is a bit pricey due to collectability-- But the 657s often are a good deal used --
\
Great guns and cartridge--
Be wary of the Tarus-- tends to go out of time quickly--

For some reason, the 657 gets short shrift around here and it shouldn't.
Yes, find a Redhawk 41 but you can't have mine.
Actually, the N frame is a match made in heaven for the 41.

I wanna 4" fixed sight barrel to shoot 45 acp, 45 ar, and 45 Super. Have someone relieve the rear of the 41 cylinder and chamber it to standard 45 auto specs. Unless I can get a new cylinder inxtead.
I can't handle 4" 44 mag M29's, but I used to shoot full charge 41's. It tore the web of my hand apart- but I usually shot expert ( 90/91/92% ) despite the bleeding. Unfortunately I also could shoot a 2&1/2" m19 at distinguised master lever, quicker, and with the 125 grain HP's that are still the standard for highest stoppong power.
I'm trying to cut back to 380/9mm/38 /357 size to do reloading. But the 45scp 1955 Target is a sweetheart. A 45 M&P Revolver like the M12 Airweight in 45 auto. I'm dreaming again

Redhawk, I hope you have a good and neccesary use for the money, because I still miss my 5.5" SS Redhawk even though I have a 7.5" Blue.

The Desert Eagles CDNN is selling for $600. Probably more accurate than any of other choices, but finicky - full power jacketed only.
Oops, wrong forum.

As already stated, the S&W 657 is an excellent choice. I have one from the late 90s, with 6" barrel. It's an excellent shooter. I'm occasionally asked about it at the range, escpecially when I have it beside my 610. Those N frames generate lots of interest.

So what are the pros and cons between the S&W model 57 and 657?
munk

If you go back far enough- to the 60's, some will argue the worksmanship is better. Then we have the pinned vs pressure fit barrels. And remember you can't get a modern blue or nickel 41 from Smith, or different barrel lengths.
Today's 657 incorporates all the improvements designed for the 44 to withstand itself- giving the .41 even more margin, one that it really did not need. I had a 657 that was a work of art. Tight and accurate. Might be the N gun improvements will keep the 41 shooting accurately as good as forever.
The bottom line is find a 41 you like and keep it. This thread should have been entitled, "What's a bad .41?" Because they're all good.
Arguably, only the Taurus may not be 'as good'.
The 41 likes itself. It feels right, is efficient, strikes hard enough for most handgunners, and fits well in the N frame. It is rare to hear of an inaccurate 41.

i have stated a number of times, in the forums, and at the lunch table, that if it came down to "only one", it would be my 657.
YMMV, but, this gun was made with me in mind.
