Looks like whats left of an old WWII panzer. And fairly well preserved at that.

Looks like a Soviet T34 that was captured and used by Germans... Awesome.

Yea that slanted armor is more along the lines of a Russian job.

Look what I found. I knew it didn't look like any German design I'd seen before.

It's a T-34. I'll hazard that it's a later -76 model.

It looks to be well preserved- I wonder how much work to restore it?

T-34. I believe that it is a later model (not an 85 though).:scrutiny:

Looks like someone tried to drive it into the pond, and it got stuck on the bank.

Where were the photos taken?

It's very well preserved. The oxygen levels in the water in that part of the world are so low, things don't rust like they do in other spots. If you read around on that site, somewhere it says that it didn't take much work to get it running again. Here's another article about the recovery effort:

And, to PeteRR, good call. It is a -/76.

T-34/76. The angled turret sides, and extended doghouse mantlet are a dead giveaway. Ah,that would be a good find - remember when Interordance sold fully restored T-34s for $50,000, until someone apparently actually bought one, and the price jumped to $100,000? :p

Sorry guys, all these finds belong to the state, and is going to some museum. No personal belongings. Haven't heard much about the tank after the finding, it should be under restoration now, a year ago it was only conservated.

There are many finds like that left here, since on the Narva front there were one of the fiercest fights between nazis and commies (most of those casualties mentioned belonged to red army), so there's plenty of that kind of stuff lying around everywhere. Unexploded munitions are pretty common (mines, shells), a lot of firearms (I do remember a found fallschimjäger's FG-42, a true rarity), mountains of ammo, some planes, at least one confirmed Tiger tank in swamp (thus in excellent condition).

Lakes are usually pretty cold, low on salts (under 1 promille, usually 0 - 0.1), low on oxygen, having muddy bottoms (which is a very good preservative agent).

The T34/76 was so well preserved that just fill the fueltank, a little oil here&there and you're all set to roll off. Gun was ready to shoot, ammo on board was in excellent condition. Practically NIB.

Inexperienced Russian drivers did get a lot of tanks stuck- I remember reading where one German officer came across three T-34's that were abandoned simply because the drivers got stuck.

Yep, T-34 Model of 1943, still with the 76.2mm gun. What great durable tanks they were! The T-34/85 versions were still fighting in the Yugo Civil War in the early 90's.

IIRC, these pics are at least 4 years old. The T-34 was deliberately dropped into the water as the Germans retreated West. The muck grew up around the thing afterward.

Very interesting that the tank looks a good as it does. I would like to see what it looks like now also.

On a side note if you click the next msg button on the bottom of the page about 5 times you will see something else that is very interesting. NOT SAFE FOR WORK though.

Yes, I have to agree. That's some interesting equipment.
