Delivering the Lead

Which is going to be faster to deliver the lead to the BG's COM; the shotgun under the bed or the revolver under the pillow?
I figure by the time you clear away the shoes, grab the shotgun, try to position it to your shoulder and then pull out the dirty sock from the bore you can reach for the .38 revolver and have emptied the whole cylinder.
That's why my shotgun isn't loaded and my revolver in the bedroom is.
Am I missing something?

The handgun is to fight your way to the long gun, or when you have run the long gun dry...
If the intruder is already in the bedroom when you become aware of his presence then the handgun would make sense fired from the bed (beneath the covers).
If you are up before the intruder has made it into the same room.... grab the long gun.

Keep your shoes in the closet and your socks in the drawer.

I know a 12G (or even 20G) is awesome at close ranges .... trouble is .. it is (to me) an unwieldy weapon.
I'll stick with my day carry (P97 now) ... and that is on the floor right down from where my hand would drop to touch floor. It is positioned so that orientation is correct ... and being just under the bed base ''frill'' is near invisible to casual glance.
This suits me . and because it ain't on nightstand it ain't ''advertizing'' itself. A subtle pick up of that and I am able to deal with things much better I think that trying to manouver an awkward scatter gun!!
Revolver .. much same advantage as my auto in this setting.

Not to whine, but here in Mayor Daley's handgun-free city only the bad guys are allowed to have pistols... so us law abiding citizens can only have long guns... and those must not, repeat not, be EVIL looking like Assualt Weapons. So, me and my Mossberg pump will just have to be awake sooner or shoot straighter.

Have to say Bruce .. if it was my only choice ... me and ''Mossy 500'' would certainly still make a good team!! I sure wouldn't knock it! :)

hmmm. since i've never done that before i guess i'll just have to armchair hypothosis..... I'd choose shotgun because i think that one scenario of stopping the BG would be to cause enough damage and bleeding so the blood pressure drops to a point where the BG becomes unconscious. most easily done with a COM hit by a shotty (pump/o.u./sxs/semi). Second would be injury to the central nervous system (Da Brainz) and a shotgun to the head would demolish it completley. I find in pistolshooting you're generally taught to place 2/3 in the COM and then proceed to the brain if the shots have been ineffective. Why 2/3? i dunno for sure but in a high stress situation the 1st shot might miss a vital by a few "inches". not so with a shotty. Me choice anything that shoots 00Buck with more than 5 shots cap. But i'm just sittin in my chair chillin and thinking and i ain't a expert so take it like you want it.
If I was that worried I'd learn to sleep prone, shotty pointed to the door. But if my drool fowled the action i'd have to reach for my G34 :D
When I Keep a Shotgun here, one in the chamber, full mag tube, safety on. Snick-boom. Always have.
In another life, with a woman and kid in the house taught safety-4 Rules Always. Easy Access secure," hidden areas" designed around the house when I built house-for that purpose...daylight access easy/secure...evening even more easy to reach.
Currently use CCW's. Lifestyle, life experiences ( another thread).
CCW's : one in chamber, C&L , full mag. Snick-bang theory of HD.
Same for BUG--any other CCW I may or may not have, always fully loaded, chambers, cyls, xtra mags, speedloaders...

Pistol by the bed for close encounters. Dot_mdb is right; you're not going to deploy a shotgun with a perp already in the room unless you're sleeping with it by your side.
Shotgun by the bed for those bumps in the night that aren't already in your bedroom. Nothing like the sound of a shotgun racking to tighten a perp's sphincter.

My HD 870s aren't under the bed. Since I'm the only shotgunner here, there's a variety of revolvers for the non shotgunners.
IMO, there's so great a number of factors to consider that no iron clad rules exist. After reviewing all the factors, we should try to make the best choices for US.

I'm going for the shotgun first. In this region, we don't have a lot of gang members and such, but the wackadoos are most likely going to be very to extremely drunk, lunatics, or on drugs such as meth. The few home invasions that have occured here, it was always one of those three. We're close to the interstate and lunatic drifters travel it. Make mine shotgun. If I cannot grab it in time, I have a handgun. But for my first choice grab, my Winchester Defender 12 gauge is IT. I know what it can do with #1 and 00 buck and I KNOW that is exactly what I want if faced with the variety of wackadoos that prowl this region. Guy suggesting to leave the shotgun behind should see what some drunks here are capable of. For certain physiological reasons, some of the drunks in this region react very differently (and usually, quite violently) to alcohol in their system. When you see what they are capable of when drunk, believe me, you'll wish you had a 8 gauge if attacked by one of them. And as far as the drugged-up go, I saw a guy on PCP run down La Brea in Los Angeles smashing out plate-glass windows with his hands. His hands were down to bone and arms like hamburger by the time he was caught. Blood all over the place. Loss of blood slowed him enough for the police to apprehend him. But he took out a lot of windows before they arrived. Shotgun, shotgun, shotgun.
