Just shot trap for the first time last Sunday in 9 years and I gotta be honest- I love it. I shot 22/25 on my second/last game of the day. What a blast!

My 28" Franchi I-12 was SMOKING! Too much fun for me, the back of my brain starts hurting from smiling so hard.. you know that feeling?

:D

But the real question is... have you ever tried sporting clays?

To me, trap is fun like a trip to the driving range. Then there is sporting clays which is like a nice 9-holes of golf, golf with a shotgun. It doesn't get any better than that.

I shot at the range in San Clemente, in S. Orange County.

They have two fields, a trap and skeet. Is skeet the same as sporting clays? I don't think so..

Anyway, the shottie is 100x more fun than shooting targets with the ol .45!

Welcome to the dark side.... Trap is as addictive as heroine. Now, join the ATA and get those registered birds in...

Sporting clays is a combination of Trap, Skeet and other variables thrown in; like a rabbit and a springing teal. It's birds from every-which-way.

I like to shoot targets too, but I prefer to shoot moving targets.

This is simplified but.... I dear hunt for meat. I bird hunt for the love of the sport.

Skeet shooters can do it 25X in a row - 8 different ways.

Yeah, but they've got smaller *ahem* "gauges".

Q. How can you tell if a trapshooter is an extrovert?
A. He's looking at your shoes when he talks to you.

Yes I censored myself, figured Art's Grandma would be so proud of me.
Great, witty reply if I do say so myself.

Re; Clay games...
It is all good, just some more gooder than others. ;)

Re; Clay games...
It is all good

Isn't that the truth?! I've never been out shooting clays thinking "Man, I wish I was at work!", but the same can't be said the other way around.

BTW, Steve...

Sporting Clay shooters have bigger... credit card bills :uhoh: :D

It costs money to have golf bags and /or golf carts converted to Sporting Clay Specs.

BozemanMT, any truth to the rumor your wife's bag/cart set up has a front license plate "I shoot better than him" and the rear one "I still shoot better than him" ?

:p

Kidding.
Folks don't realize it is all good. Lots of good natured fun and kidding in Firearm Disciplines across the board. Clay shooters just like others need to remember it is not a "Us vs Them" - we are on the same side, no matter if we shoot the same sport, same types of guns or not.

Firearm Community is what we are - and should strive to maintain to be.

Steve -

Good point about community. The comments I made are purely in good-natured jest.

I look at it this way... friends joke around. Being serious all the time isn't much, well, fun. We run the whole gamut here: skeet, sporting clays, trap, tactical, anti-tactical, three-gun, autoloader, singles, SxS, pumps, O/U, beginners, experts, even non and anti-gunners (let's not forget all the lurkers).

IMO, some light-hearted ribbing is a positive sign of the community we've built here. It's when things get taken wrong or traded barbs get sharp that we drift from the mission of THR.

As you said... It's all good. All of it. Shotguns, handguns, rifles, pistols, revolvers, BP, reloading, knives and gadgets. Tamara commented once about "Silly little tribes." They are found everywhere, in every sport and in every walk of life. However, we don't do ourselves any favors to walk down that path.

Trap is great "real world experience" for upland game, especially birds. I used to (it's been a while) shoot 98-99% at the trap range (used to shoot 100 at a time). NEVER missed any game in the field.

Skeet and sporting clays are a bit more specialized (but still good), but for basics, stick to trap until you're hitting on almost every shot. The first time I shot skeet, it was a humbling experience---barely hit anything even though I was lethal on the trap range. Its just a bifferent ballgame.

P.S. Congratulations 22/25 is pretty good for a first time out.

dfaugh - I'm not too sure about this. Trap does an OK job of simulating pheasant hunting with dogs... as long as you don't shoot high-gun. Skeet gives you experience with a wider variety of angles. In fact, I think skeet is pretty good practice for things like grouse and quail.

Sporting clays, IMO, does a great job at getting you ready for just about any presentation... woodcock going straight up until they clear the trees, birds curling one way or another as they come down, ducks appearing from behind, geese passing overhead, etc...

Of the three main disciplines, I find that trap is probably the most limited with respect to hunting (unless most of your hunting is pheasants over dogs).

I just shot trap today. One round with a 18 1/2" Rem870 "tacticool" BBBBWWWWWAAAAAA!(4/25) , one round with a 28" Rem870 (17/25), and two rounds with a 28" Moss500 (17/25, 18/25).

Unless I got them before they came out of the house with the 18 1/2" 870, I got to watch them sail away.:cuss: Cyl. bore is not a good trap choke!:D

I shot a 23 last fall with a Remington 870 Tactical 18.5 cylinder bore, extened magazine, pistol grip silly green parkerizing stuff and a Knoxx Cop Stock.

The whole place was laughing, I couldn't believe it myself.
It's at least as good as I usually shoot.

Cylinder bore works fine at 16 yards.

If you are a trap shooter and skeet shooter comes over and shoots some trap with you, you should get around and go shoot some skeet with them. That way it is only fair to watch them beat you like you did them.
It's good for both of you.

I've been there. Behind the golf course, right?

We've got four sporting clays clubs in the Los Angeles area. They're on my website
