Hello to all the US servicemen on active duty or retired and my special gratitude to the gallant men who took part in the controversal war in Vietnam.

I have recently bought an M17A1 mask for $70.
The brown carton box containing the mask and it's canvas bag reads:
A-1A-8X May 1972
cure date Dec 1968
Lot no 2011-95-2134R
Filter lot 2028-95-1055

It came with the 2 side filters already attached.
My questions are:
- Are the filters still effective and how do they fit on the mask?
- What do these filters protect the wearer from, how to replace them?
- Can I find other types of filters for different protections.
- What is the 2" diameter perforated disk for (I can see the light thru some of the holes).
- What should I add to the present system in order to drink with the mask on?
- Can I enhance communication when I talk?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I doubt the filters are any good. Maybe for a riot control agent. If the faceblank was made in 68, you probably don't have a working mask, just a collector's item.

The rubber deteriorates and has probably hardened some into a shape that may not seal.

- Can I find other types of filters for different protections. 2 kinds, training use only (riot agents) and "war", allegedly everything. What color are the rings on the filters? Blue or gold? You have to pull 'em out, it's not hard, but you can't just read about it here and learn...
- What is the 2" diameter perforated disk for (I can see the light thru some of the holes).If it's in front, it's ther "Voicemitter", which lets others hear you speak. There should be a rubber disk inside of it, if not, you REALLY have a "suicide special!"
- What should I add to the present system in order to drink with the mask on? If it's an A1 all you need is a canteen with the proper cap.
- Can I enhance communication when I talk?Speak slowly and ennunciate...:evil:

Information on gas mask, good and bad and crummy.
Although I am a new member to this form, and I do not know just how it works.
So, answer me to my personal e-mail address if it shows. If not just say so, and we will work it out.
there are many places. You can buy good working gas masks.
One of which is approvedgasmask.com
goes there and you will get a good idea of just what is out there.
But don't buy. They are very expensive, although very helpful people.
Basically, you are looking for a gas mask. That is NATO approved, and they have them, plenty.
Get the model number, and then run a search on Google or foogle I think, you will be happy.
