870 mag tube length question

Gents,

Okay, I admit I don't know much about 870s. I knew my recently aquired Wingmaster held four shots, and assumed I needed a plus three extension to get it to seven. I found a hell of a deal on a slightly used extension (I believe it's even factory) for $15. Unfortunately it extends past the barrel about a shell's length. An LEO friend of mine said use it anyway, the blast will just discolor it. My question is, would that be safe? If not I will just sell it and get a plus two.

Thanks in advance!

It should not be a problem, if you don't mind the look.

If you've installed it already and it works, great. My 870 had tabs inside the mag tube that I had to file down with a semi-circular file before I could use an extension.

It may or may not be OK, but it sure looks hokey.

Don't care about looks really, just function. I don't need the extension, but I like the added weight up front. The shotgun was $50, and I paid another $30 for the tube and a used black polymer stock set with the metal hardware for the fore-end included. I am basically just setting it up as an HD gun on the cheap.

Any other opinions on the safety of the tube protruding past the barrel?

If so, you can add an extended choke tube, perhaps one of the ported versions, and that will get the muzzle somewhat closer to the end of the magazine extension.

It is just cylinder bore. Was an old police gun if my LEO friend is right. There is a number carved in the bottom of the wood stock like many PDs would do.

It'll work, but it will look a bit funny and the top surface will oxidize fast from the hot gases passing by it. A two shot extension will look better and be slightly more compact, if that's important.

Dave,

Thanks for the info! I will probably just run with this for now and see how problematic it is. The extra length is minimal so not to worried there.

You're welcome and glad I am to help. Be advised that the extension on my HD 870 runs about 1/4" past the muzzle. I keep it lubed, cleaning and relubing after each use, and no probs yet. Been there since the early 80s.
